I've never spent more than $15 on a set of headphones, and I have gone through maybe 10 sets in the last 5 years. I typically just take the old ones that my friends don't need and use them until they break. This, obviously, is a shitty way to experience non-shitty music. I like the MDR-V6's because everyone seems to say they last forever and sound incredible, which is all I want. I just don't know if it's worth it to spend $70 (about $40 more than I want to) on a quality headphone if I'm only going to be using it in my Walkman, and occasionally in the laptop or straight out of my guitar amp. I've also been looking into the lower end AKG, Sennheiser, and Grado lines, but I have no idea which to choose as I don't have the opportunity to hear any of them before buying.
So, yes, any recommendations would be appreciated.
And to pretend to divert this back onto the topic, I am stuck with this insipid behind-the-ear affair that I somehow got at Radio Shack for $2. The price was obviously mis-marked, but it's not like anyone gives a shit about Radio Shack anyway so the employee just pretended not to notice. They have miraculously not broken, though it's horrifying to imagine them sounding any more terrible.
