5Id have to say my favorite is Mudhoney's cover of Revolution(Spacemen 3). Other favorites are
Xui Xui's cover of Fast Car (tracy chapman)
Shellac's cover of Jailbreak
Mogwai's cover of Honey (Spacemen 3)
Failure, Enjoy the Silence(Depeche Mode, best cover ever)
Grandaddy, Here (pavement)
All of Johnny Cash's covers
I think a list of worst covers would be a more appropriate topic........

7Jawbox - Cornflake Girl (Tori Amos)
Trans Am - Bad Reputation (Thin Lizzy)
Jawbreaker - Pretty Persuasion (REM)
Frank Zappa - Purple Haze (Hendrix)
Melvins - I Want To Hold Your Hand (Beatles)
Helloween - All My Loving (Beatles)
I could probably go on all day with this, but there's cleaning to get back to.

8All of these covers are good. I would also add Dead Kennedys cover of Viva Las Vegas. cant think of others off hand.

9No Means No - Forward to Death (Dead Kennedys)
Cat Power - I Found a Reason (Lou Reed)
Ry Cooder - FDR in Trinidad (along w/ many tracks on his first 3 albums)
John Fahey - Any of those Episcopal hymns I've learned from his recordings
Minutemen - Green River
Richard Thompson - Oops! I did it again.
I know jazz (and blues) render(s) the concept of 'covers' irrelevant, but:
Mar Ribot - While My Guitar Gently Weeps
John Coltrane - My Favorite Things
That's all for now.
Maybe also--at least live--No Means No - Hey hey my my (into the black)
The first time they did this I almost came.

10Engine Kid "Needle and the Damage Done"
That "Believe" cover on the Macha/Bedhead record is pretty great.
"Highway 61 Revisited" by PJ Harvey.
"The Chain" SKWM. That and "Independence Day". Both are quite, quite great.
I think Neil Young's "Oh Lonesome Me" is really wonderful as well. Better than the amped up version by Don Gibson.
On, and "Yoo Doo Right" by Geraldine Fibbers transforms that song into a pop hit. Really. It's pretty okay!
