Hockey is arguably, the most exciting sport there is - when watched IN PERSON. Games on TV will never do the "game" justice, or ever will.

I consider myself a HUGE hockey fan. However, I care more about the lint your belly-button than I do about this season being called off.
Over the last decade, I've watch the owners ruin a once great league by diluting it with over-expansion, offering outrageous contracts to mediocre players, charging $75 for a seat three rows from the moon to help pay for the outrageous contracts to mediocre players and on and on.

It was a pleasure to watch Gary Bettman shoot the league in its bullet-riddled foot yesterday. It's funny to hear the old dustball owners like Bill Wirtz (Chicago Blackhawks) proclaim that the "NHL will persevere."

Why is this funny to me? Because outside of myself, there's roughly 6,843 other people in the U.S. who actually gave a damn about the NHL before the lockout - and that includes the hockey tradition-rich Columbus market!

They're all sorry sacks to me. And when/if they do play again, I will attend the Hawks home opener just so I, and the other 39 "fans" who attend can yell "F you!" to Wirtz and Co., and know that he heard it.

Hockey was dead before. Now it's deader than dead. This is sad, to true fans. But it's well-deserved.

And by the way... I must argue against the notion that has been brought up twice now, that hockey players "pretend to fight" while on skates.
This is absolutely not the case when two players want to fight. I steadfastly agree that when one is indifferent, it's a weak "fight" indeed.
However, I've seen fights on ice that would make a European soccer crowd fight look like a thumb war.

I would just like to share my own personal (and therefore, anecdotal and worthless) two cents on hockey fighting.

I have played a lot of violent sports in my life. I boxed at a high amateur level for seven years and spent a year training to fight K-1 before common sense set in. I have stood in a ring and traded punches with people you would not allow to be in the same room as your children. People who probably should not be walking freely among society.

That said, the one and only time I ever took a punch that I thought had fucked me up permanently was in a high school hockey game when I was 15. I sparred for three years with WBA Flyweight champion Eric Morel (career record: 35-1), and yet the only punch I ever felt for weeks and weeks was delivered by a kid who was probably 16, on ice, in skates.

So as an individual with significant experience in receiving blows to the head, I call bullshit on the "they're not really fighting if they're on ice" theory. Although I understand how, to an observer, it seems logical.

Whoa! You were gonna fight that mountain? I think you made the right move by quitting. No offense, but that's a fight no one can win.

Um, I'm pretty sure K-1 means Kindergarten to 1st Grade.

For the record, the mountain you're thinking of is K2 (aka Chogori, or "the Widowmaker").

K-1 is an insane japanese fighting sport that is a hybrid of drunken boxing and martial arts.

It's the most popular spectator sport in most of asia.

I know, I know. I was just bein' a jerk. The K-1, she is insane.

The trainer, he tell me "You big, you take beating good. You go here, you take knee in balls from crazy Asian man who take the steroids too much. You make money."

But then I realize she is the crazy, and the money, she will not be enjoyable if I am in chair with wheels and need tube for eating.
