I'm thinking about getting a Sennheiser e906 to use for recording guitar.
Anybody use one of these?
I want it to close mic a guitar cab. It's for home recording so we're not talking huge volumes.
It's about as much as I can afford - I can get one for £70, which seems like a pretty good price. The reviews I've read have been good. Are there any alternatives around the same price?
I think this is the first thread I've started in the Tech room.

2i like them. not the best mic or anything but for $100 they are a good deal. i used one on a guitar amp a few months ago and liked how it sounded. i've also used them on toms with good results.

3Thanks elisha wiesner.
I'm going to change the title of the thread to "Hey Steve! Did you use an e906 to record In Utero?" and see if I can get some some more responses.

4For a dynamic mic, it's great. Does really well on guitar, and while they site it's ability to deal with high SPL as an asset, it sounds better when it's not having to deal with too much.
I like the 906 a lot better than the 609. I spent a long time trying to get a 609 to sound good on my 50 watt amp, and it never quite got there. Okay on a bright snare, but not the first mic I'd reach for.
A quick search will reveal a lot more thoughts on this mic. I seem to remember some hack named Weston liking this mic a lot.
Maybe you should consider getting a cheap ribbon as an option? There are a lot out there, and they're all going to have an interesting sound. I'd say it's worth considering. I find my cheap ribbon mic (a Cascade Fat Head) does better with a wide variety of sounds. But it might not be what you're looking for. You should be able to find one in the same price range.

5I think it is a good mic. I've used it in place of an M88 (my preferred close dynamic mic on most sounds) when that mic is too shrill sounding for brighter sounds and it works. Seems to give a smooth, flat response. Also, definitely good as a rack tom mic, but not too close to the head or it farts.

6I have one of them and I have used them with equal success on rack and floor toms. If you don't believe us, watch Tommy Lee in one of those Dr. Feelgood videos. Mine is the predecessor to the mic you speak of. They sort of have a cool mid range for electric guitars too.

Yes. I did my search for e906 - when *906* would have got me better results!
Thanks for your posts. I'm going to go with it.

8if it helps, i've been using an e609 recently to close mic a Vox AC15 and i think it sounds great.
Disappointing the masses since 2006 http://www.low-point.com

9Becoming quite partial to this mic, thinking about picking one up myself.
Nice option live as well, can add a bit of crunch to distorted guitar.
