TBH it does me no good at band practice but I do like the sound through a clean amp at home.Yeah, I've realised that this is what I use my Philosopher's Tone Mini for - emulating the sound of a loud clean amp at low volume, which just isn't necessary when you can actually turn up loud. I wrestle all the time with the clean/compressed balance - at the mo, it's maybe 90% clean. The attack seems to come and go. SOmetimes it just seems easier to say "fuck it" and use an OD with minimal gain. Either my ears or the sound of my set up seems to shift subtly but constantly.

My friend and I have similar sounds ordinarily - him using his Marshall JCM and a 2x12 and me using a red knob Twin. My question about a pedal to push that ringyness and slight compression (so playing becomes easier and you want to play lighter and softer on the strings) is because I have a different amp for another band I'm in and whilst it'll do that 'thing' it won't do it at a volume that's healthy.I tried a Fulltone OCD last night with the compression switch off and the overdrive on almost zero and it nailed it for me. Got the amp more responsive and ringy and didn't sound like a overdrive at all.And the Fulldrive after it still boosted and added gain without the amp maxing out into mush.

I can get it nicely for recording but the HH amp I run needs to be a little too loud to get it easily - though when it is loud it sounds incredible. It's solid state so I'm thinking it's not about drive but about compression and frequency boosting. Going to give a Keeley Compressor a bash I think to just even it all out and give it a boost at lower volume on the HH.This is a great tone and there s a... I d call it œsponginess to the tone that I love, but can t seem to nail. I thought a compressor would be a start, but I can t seem to get my Janglebox to do that kind of compressed-but-clear thing. I m starting to wonder if there are certain pickup qualities with regard to this tone? An alnico thing? Speaker thing? Tube rectifier thing?Reading that got me to thinking.I have seen a few folks bring up being fans of the way the Fairfield Circuitry Barbershop approximates that sort of thing. This video is a pretty good example of the way it hits/misses. Again, it's sort of tough to guess at how it might work in the setup that honeyisfunny described. Can confirm that the Barbershop will get you in this ballpark. It's an always-on pedal for me, partly to push the amp but primarily to get the sag going. I feel like the sound I've chased for a while is exactly what your friend has done on that recording. I would love to know what his setup was.
