I couldn't get into this second album -- the "blackened prog" balance had shifted too far in the prog direction for me -- but I really loved VHOL's self-titled debut. Much more raw and crusty, which helps Mike's Geddy Lee-isms go down easier. His lyrics on that album are great, too; a lot of populist eat-the-rich kinda stuff. Killer live band both times I saw them, including opening the "metal night" of "Neurosis Fest" in 2016. VHOL was also the next best thing to a Ludicra reunion until Ails formed.

The new Darkthrone is definitely too obvious, but who cares. INVOKE THE DRASTIC SPELLS!

I was exposed to Hatred For Mankind by Dragged Into Sunlight over the weekend.

Pretty good, especially if you have a tolerance for serial killer samples. I explored their subsequent release, Widowmaker, but was pretty meh about it.
