Hopeful to do some Something Tough recording in a few months, and maybe doing some odds and ends for new Bismarck record this summer. Last time I ended up dealing with terrible latency for overdubs. I'm using Reaper and a Tascam US 1604. I went through all the typical settings, no luck.
Certain it is something stupid and simple. Just want to be sure it is ironed out ahead of time. Anyone got some advice for a tech-challenged old man?

3don't know, but lowering visual resolution is supposed to make things snappier

4There should be generic guides for optimizing your operating system for audio. If you're on Windows 10, do this one: https://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/ar ... indows-10/
Make sure you're using the ASIO driver for your interface or Asio4all.
It helps having one hard drive where your OS and DAW are installed and another one where your recordings go.

5I use Reaper with a Tascam us1641 for drum tracking with my ancient laptop and although both components are very old, it works very well. I reckon (as above) it's probably either Reaper not using asio drivers, or simply that you need to adjust/lessen latency setting which should be available to you via a click to the upper right hand of the Reaper screen where the latency/buffer details are displayed.
I can post some pictures during the next few days if that would help as I would assume the Tascam driver settings would look similar...

6I'll break out and fire up the system when I have a free evening later this week. But I do have the ASIO, and I did go through are reduce buffer, etc- all the things people typically suggest. No dice on any of it. Could it be the monitoring only? as everything tracked fine, and only had issues while overdubbing. It has been a bit- so will review and refresh my memory-

7Take a look through this thread, and see if it reads like Jawas talking.

If so, there are a couple of potential culprits there.

8You say your Tascam is 1604? I'm not familiar with that, but almost all interfaces have a direct monitor facility, so unless whatever you're recording requires software monitoring, that should address any latency issues. Just blend the recorded track output with direct signal with the blend control to taste...
I guess if you're using midi stuff that's no help.
Also, some vsts introduce massive latency if they have look ahead; Ozone for example. Maybe try taking any plugins offline (ctrl/shift/click on pc).

Re: Latency- help my dumb ass
9The Tascam Direct monitoring is controlled in the Tascam control software on my US-1200. There is slider control to balance if you are monitoring the Hardware or the software. You can monitor with zero latency. If you are overdubbing with a vst instrument you will need to knock your latency down to around 128 to monitor with latency low enough to not drive you nuts. I, in the past, have overcome this buy using a keyboard that generates its own sound as a controller, like a digital piano with midi, so I can listen to the actual piano controller in real time instead of the output of the VST. I have not had to run buffers higher than 128 in years though since most newer computers of any OS seem to handle it with little to no ill effect.Adam_I_III wrote: Mon Jun 21, 2021 4:10 am You say your Tascam is 1604?
