Yep! and technically without a kick res head (or the better solution, this around 4:00) any kit can 'nest' to a degree. Just be sure you're playing venues with kick drum mics as you lose a lot of volume without the res head.
Something about the band-in-a-Subaru just appeals to me as a puzzle to solve. The guitar version of that which I think about a lot is the guitar-rig-in-a-single-trip-from-the-car. Like, pedalboard on backpack/shoulder strap, amp in one hand, guitar in other hand. Not really a conceptual hurdle, but getting the sound/volume with stuff you can get isn't always so easy.

I did this a couple times with my last rock trio. IIRC we loaded the 3 of us with my drums (12/14/20 sized, in soft cases), a half stack, couple guitars and I think we borrowed a bass cab. That was about at capacity but if we had nested a floor tom in the kick and used a combo guitar amp, I bet we could have fit 4 people in.

In reference to the original question, I ditched the electric kit and bought some Vic Firth silencer pads, for the acoustic kit with a snare practice pads on the snare for some bounce. It is by far the best solution for me to date, although it sounds calls.

In reference to small transport, we used to travel in a 1972 1.6l VW camper (with camper conversion). Four piece rock band. Slow going up hills! Almost certainly not legal these days...
