While I don't care about J.R or N.Y at all, I had never previously heard this little gem from 1985 that had been conveniently flushed down the memory hole:

“You go to the supermarket and you see a faggot behind the fucking cash register, you don’t want him to handle your potatoes.”

One might charitably discribe that statement as misinformation.
Neil flirted with being a conservative in the 1980s. It didn't take.
When the seemingly inevitable pitchforks and torches of retribution come for Neil with this quote as the tip of the spear, I think fully admitting to his flirtation with conservativism is strategically his best, most Neil Young-est defense.

the way I read it Neil is protesting the Media Production company Spotify, by pulling his content from the platform.

Neil has long since distanced himself from the conservative stands he and many of his peers took in the 80's, instead of doubling or tripling down like Clapton.

Rogan is a much bigger asset for Spotify than NY, especially as part of their strategy to make podcasts central to their profits. It appears going to Spotify exclusively has shrunk Rogan's audience and influence, so maybe NY should be thankful to Spotify, funny enough.

It's shitty that NY hasn't made artist pay part of his public platform re: streaming, but guy is wealthy beyond all imagination and clearly not worried about smaller artists getting shafted (makes his "Support Local Music" Tshirt in the Barn documentary/sessions seem like an empty gesture). And he's been promoting Amazon and Apple streaming, while selling off his publishing rights to the slimy Hipgnosis, whose whole mission is to turn "legacy" songs into financial instruments for investors. So on the economics, Neil's got no high ground and isn't even trying for it.

It's relevant that both NY and Joni Mitchell had polio though. A friend tells me that JM developed her open tuning guitar style because of weakness/disability in her hands from polio and this is also why she played dulcimer. NY had to relearn how to walk after his hospitalization for polio and had lifelong back and spine problems because of it. Also had diabetes and epilepsy and two sons with cerebral palsy, so health care and medical science is close to home for him. I don't see Neil's anti-Rogan trip as comparable to Metallica attacking listeners for file sharing. Different motivations, different issues, different targets, different tactics.

His relationship with quake cures, and fake medicine with Ben Young in particular could definitely be a huge influence on this stance.

Neil Young and Eric Clapton are labelmates on Reprise Records.

I wonder if Neil has had a heart-to-heart with Reprise Records? "Me or Eric, you can't have both!"

That wouldn't be as big of a Media ("look at me, I'm an integrity boy!" ) explosion, and would absolutely impact NY pocket book extensively, so I'm guessing that conversation did not happen at all.

Rogan's audience numbers are such that I'd argue that he is the mainstream atm, esp if Spotify have chose to back him over Neil.
I think there are still large numbers of people who are not very online.
