As deterrents go....
Fucking scared straight
R.E.M. committed several musical atrocities, but is that one worse than "Stand"?
I associate “Stand” with the opening credits of Get a Life, so hearing it has the Pavlovian effect of putting me in a good mood.

Years ago I had two idiot redneck roommates who just listened to Slayer. Maybe a little Metallica thrown in for coloration but mostly Slayer Slayer Slayer every goddamned day. It took a LONG time to disassociate the band from my bad memories of these jerkoffs. But then I saw Slayer live and they were awesome. Hope that doesn't make me a redneck.

Just remembered over the weekend my old neighbor, Creepy Kurt, who had a tendency to just walk over on to my patio (it was an open shared parking lot for three buildings owned by the same slumlord but the patio was mine) drunk carrying a two foot purple bong and a shitty iPod dock in broad daylight and would ask me, as though he had completely forgotten that he'd done so two days earlier, whether I had heard Nick Cave's "No Pussy Blues" then exclaim that I had to hear Nick Cave's "No Pussy Blues" and pull it up on his iPod and plug in the shitty tinny speaker dock and just crank the volume, doubtlessly annoying the residents of the hospice across the alley.

Never was able to listen to NC&TBS after that, they'll forever be associated with that dumbass.

I have other Creepy Kurt stories that further illustrate how he got the name but I've got to take off for work.

It really was just that one song.

Further creep factors included chatting up servers at the local watering hole about sex scenes in HBO shows and hentai, then leaving them one hundred percent tips.

He skeeved out my ex by sitting next to her at the bar and then just saying nothing. I think it was at this point that he knew I didn't like him so, instead of leaving, he just sat on the other side of my then-gf and fingered his tequila shot. She told me later that he creeped her out.

The one time I had to tell him off, I was on the phone, getting the news a friend of mine just died. This doofus comes over and stares at me and says, "What's up, dude?"
I tell him, "Not now, man. A friend of mine just died."
"Oh... You want to go to the Herkimer?"*
"Dude, I am on the phone. Go away."

* To this day, I still wonder why he thought we would hang out; up until that point I had been nothing but cold to him.
