Offend Maggie is objectively the best starting point, and probably their best album.
Runners Four and The Magic round out the holy trinity for me, they're untouchable. But the newest one was a valiant effort...

12Gave it a listen back in the day, didn't click with me.
May try again one of these days.
Won't vote though.

13Won't vote crap and I'm sure they're very nice people but I cannot stand this band. I think it's mainly the drummer but...eh, I dunno, they just get on my nerves.

14Is it cause he used rides as hi hats for a while? Or the general busyness?MoreSpaceEcho wrote: Tue Jun 13, 2023 8:38 am Won't vote crap and I'm sure they're very nice people but I cannot stand this band. I think it's mainly the drummer but...eh, I dunno, they just get on my nerves.
I like on the new album how he decided to play eighths on the snare to cut out hi hat parts because he was tired of how much space they take up sonically.

15I gave Offend Maggie a listen. Definitely an interesting band, but not for me.prowler wrote: Tue Jun 13, 2023 2:07 am Offend Maggie is objectively the best starting point, and probably their best album.

One song had this great hook that evoked MBV and Neil Young, but was surrounded by choppy prog-indie.
I'd rather be throwing darts.
Re: Band: Deerhoof
16yeah if you don't like choppy prog-indie then this band is probably not for you
Re: Band: Deerhoof
17I feel like every time I tried with them, I'd watch a video and he was forever bashing away on the cymbal, playing 20,000 notes in general, while sitting on a milkcrate with his knees in his eyes.losthighway wrote: Tue Jun 13, 2023 10:13 am Is it cause he used rides as hi hats for a while? Re: Band: Deerhoof
18I can only take a few of their songs on record at a time before I shut it off, but I saw them live and they were good, Greg's drumming really impressed me. N/C
"Whatever happened to that album?"
"I broke it, remember? I threw it against the wall and it like, shattered."

19Fan of Reveille, Halfbird and Apple O.
Most of everything else I've heard after sounds like Zappa type jazz fusion wanking and no decent melody or lyrics. Pass on that stuff. Respect the attitude creating it though.

20Like 'em (sometimes quite a bit) in smallish. controlled doses.
I also do appreciate that, as a band, they've developed a very varied and idiosyncratic sound that's entirely their own, whether it's the drumming, singing or approach to composition. One of those groups you can identify with the first note or seconds of music.
