eephus inadvertently turned me on to Boney M via this forum in what feels like ages ago and I did not like them at all. Much later I watched a live performance of "Brown Girl in the Ring" by Exuma and was like: oh!

I've warmed a little to Boney M; they're silly.

btw that Exuma gig smokes. Live Concert on Soul! PBS TV 1972. strongly recommended.

Same for me. I woke up to a text message from another FM delivering this terrible news. I immediately wanted to go back to bed. I saw him for the first and last time at a Come gig in London over a year ago, and my inner teenager was slightly awed. I wish I’d gone up and told him how much his writing meant to me.

Exactly the same age as me, which I only discovered after reading his anniversary piece about The Slider in TheQuietus (link) back in 2012. Absolutely gutted. Still working my way through Neil's end-of-year-rundown substack, and can't quite believe it. He lost his wife about 5 or 6 years ago, and now this...his girls must be absolutely numb. He and Dele Fadele were instrumental figures in trying to drag the UK music weeklies out of their pale-n-stale stupor in the mid-90s, and it saddens me greatly that they're both no longer with us.
