I would not be surprised because from reading about it it does not seem like it was designed as a studio recording tool at all. it seems like a large format playback sync device and media capture device. I don't see a easy way to arm disarm tracks on the fly from the front face so if you can do it you gotta do it from that tiny menu. seems like it would suck for it. Tascam makes that stand alone mixer what multitracks, it would be a better solution and actually cheaper.

You are correct, the 6400 does not do overdubs. It's a very robust device to record (and/or play back) a lot of channels.

If you want a digital tape machine situation, DAWs are still pretty hard to beat. I own several RADARs that I intend to sell pretty soon.

This is the new tascam studio recording solution. I like that it looks like a standard tape remote. For under a grand it's a 24/24 USB Io with direct SD recording as well. Sort of a useful thing I guess. I do no really fully understand a stand alone digital multi track since you can very literally just use any DAW to do just that. Anyway... Here this thing is.

DAWs crash, computers crash, computers are shit, they need updates, they hold you hostage and force you to upgrade the software, then the hardware, and then the software again because it’s not supported on the new blah blah blah. Recording to SD and then dumping to a DAW has never let me down. I went through hell with Avid, Logic Pro, Apple, and Focusrite, and then I got a Zoom LiveTrak L-12 and got my life back. It’s like recording to tape and the ln bouncing to a DAW. Easy peasy.

I’m already setup how I’m setup, but I could see loving that setup if I had a bunch of channels being recorded at once with people playing together.

It may just be my limited understanding, but I mostly like that it seems to force a situation that demands edits and other daw fixes later. I’m sure it’s still capable of punch-ins and all that though.

meh, I'm recording on a Computer I built 6 years ago and have never had an issue bad enough to stop a session. I see the value of having a stand alone recorder and dumping to a DAW to mix, but in my workflow that is just inserting another piece of hardware BETWEEN the mics and the computer and another hoop to jump through. That's just one more point of failure to account for. It's Tascam. It eventually will fail. And I've had plenty of hardware failures.

Not saying it doesn't have its place, it just doesn't have a place for me. I'd probably just buy a Allen Heath CQ18t and use it to multitrack onto SD, get a mixer out of the deal too. This Tascam doesn't do enough for me, maybe if it had some basic preamps it would make a good mobile rig but as is you need 24 preamps to use it.

24 x 24 I/O for under a grand (plus the cost of DB25 breakouts I guess) is a pretty solid deal. You could look at the SD recording as a useful backup or a way to do multitrack remotes without lugging a computer around.
