But do they feel, like they sound the same?Dr Tony Balls wrote: Thu Oct 24, 2024 9:23 am Big cabs are *cool* but I dont know that they sound better. Also I can make a small box plexi that weighs 8lbs less than what Marshall offers and I can guarantee you they sound the same.

FM Eliya just gave me back my old Silkworm cab (very generous, he bought it from me 15yrs ago).
It's a Mesa 2x15 with EVM-15Ls in it.
It weighs approximately 1000lbs.
It sounds great, now that it's been glued and screwed back into non-rattling shape (must-do process with those guys, not the greatest workmanship in some respects).
And...I think the new lightweight bass enclosures sound kind of lame.
Just not enough inert mass to get the low end out of them or something?
BUT. Some neodymium speakers can be good now--the Eminence Kappalites are close to old EVs and I buy them now when I need replacements.
Much lighter, don't miss the old heavy ass magnets.
Most of my basses are heavy (Beans, Ovation Magnum), but not all--have a quite light P-bass that sounds great (pine) and an Ampeg scroll that has low end that is hard to replicate. Also a good (toylike!) Mustang can have a really nice, deep sound.
As noted elsewhere in the forum, biggest change for me is Origin Effects Bassrig Super Vintage (fake SVT) into the power amp section of an Aguilar Tone Hammer (probably any good power amp for bass).
I don't record with that setup, but live it's nearly the same as playing thru a V4 or SVT and more predictable, with a good, post-EQ DI if the soundperson wants one.
Weighs maybe 10lbs in a Pelican.
Does not look cool at all, though.
Re: Gear Confessions Thread
193haha yeah i have to admit, I have a couple of the Kappalites and they're really great. Not only the weight but just how close the sound is to the EV15s. I have two cabs exactly the same build with EV15L and Kappalite. The Heavier cab does FEEL like it might sound better, but I know it doesn't. And I hate carrying it.eephus wrote: Sun Oct 27, 2024 4:12 pmhaha! good point!TylerDeadPine wrote:But do they feel, like they sound the same?Dr Tony Balls wrote: Thu Oct 24, 2024 9:23 am Big cabs are *cool* but I dont know that they sound better. Those road-ready mesa cabs are vicious shin destroyers.
Your live setup, the practicality and dependability is really desirable, but if it wasn't for how cool my bass rig looks I suspect my spouse would leave me
Re: Gear Confessions Thread
194Haha, fuck that thing. It caused A LOT of tension for a while there. Somehow that cab with whatever Traynor he was using was the loudest, most oppressive rig I have ever heard.eephus wrote: Sun Oct 27, 2024 4:12 pm

195When I was using a Quilter head, I kept it on the floor kinda tucked behind the cab. No one needs to see that shit.eephus wrote: Sun Oct 27, 2024 4:12 pm Origin Effects Bassrig Super Vintage (fake SVT) into the power amp section of an Aguilar Tone Hammer (probably any good power amp for bass).

I now only have the pedal/DI looking Quilter box, so I have to keep it on the floor anyway.

196I've had to put the Bass Block on the ground because lil' dude just vibrates off the cab a little too easily.penningtron wrote: Mon Oct 28, 2024 11:46 amWhen I was using a Quilter head, I kept it on the floor kinda tucked behind the cab. My (even worse-looking) solution is to take the lil foam pad out of the top of the Pelican and use it as a lil pillow for the lil Tone Hammer to rest itself upon.
I heard it was controversial!jeff fox wrote: Mon Oct 28, 2024 11:36 am Haha, fuck that thing. It caused A LOT of tension for a while there. Somehow that cab with whatever Traynor he was using was the loudest, most oppressive rig I have ever heard.
Many a soundperson's mind was blown by it in the early Worm!
It's not leaving the basement again.

199It lived in my basement for a time. I thought it was reasonably balanced with both a Sunn Beta Bass and GK. But the one time that damn Traynor was hooked up chunks of drywall started falling on us, and a few art pieces upstairs shook loose.eephus wrote: Mon Oct 28, 2024 4:27 pmI heard it was controversial!jeff fox wrote: Mon Oct 28, 2024 11:36 am Haha, fuck that thing. Re: Gear Confessions Thread
200Without even hearing it, I don't doubt that that Origin Effects bass pre-amp pedal would sound good: their Cali76 Compact Bass is one of the two or three highest-rated bass compressor pedals on the market. Had briefly thought about springing for one, despite the higher cost, but decided against it because I already have a good compressor and don't know if I'd use it enough. Maybe someday.
ANYWAY, here's my gear confession: I don't think that MKII Reverend Mike Watt bassplower looks bad at all. It seems kinda overpriced, and I wish the headstock were bigger, but I think it would be cool to own. The main problem I have with it is that I don't like signature series instruments. Have yet to buy one. Feels like I'd need to be a real superfan to pull the trigger on one. Just how it is.
