Re: Gear: TALK ME OUT OF IT or JUSTIFY MY PURCHASE?
772might depend on the price and whether you have a tape deck that works already
Pros: cheaper than a Dragon
Cons: not a Dragon

Re: Gear: TALK ME OUT OF IT or JUSTIFY MY PURCHASE?
773Since people have been suggesting getting alternative basses, I've already have a bass, so the Wattplower bass in particular would be an extra fun bass guitar for alternate tuning. The bass that I have - Gibson SB-450 - has two humbucker pickups and being able to turn on-or-off (namely, the neck) pickups suits my effects/playing. My roommate has a one split coil pickup Squier P-bass, but I wasn't a fan. Probably a build quality or feel thing since it's a Squier, which is strange because I really loved my Fender MIM Jazz Bass (which I sadly had to sell 10 years ago when I was going broke) and even with my >50 year old beaten-to-hell SB-450.ErikG wrote: Wed Nov 13, 2024 4:50 am You know how many pickups a bass needs? One. Just one pickup. More is NOT econo. Maybe they're trying to compensate for the short scale which is a total deal breaker as well.
That cable jack. Could it be closer to the bridge? I could see smacking the cable from time to time.
If you play that you do not play bass. You play "thud stick." And you have to name drop D. Boon every. Fucking. Time.
That anchor inlay. AHOY ME HARDIES!!!
Just get a decent P-bass. That's the answer 95% of the time.
(Hope that helps.)
The goofiness of the Wattplower is what I really like (including the "ALL I EAT IS SQUID yaaaaaaarrrrr" anchor), but the possible deal breakers are the short scale and if those pickups are too dark. (And the price, though I'd scour listings for used. But especially the short scale.)
Well, those, and:

Re: Gear: TALK ME OUT OF IT or JUSTIFY MY PURCHASE?
774I think I mentioned this previously, but having actually played the wattplower it's an excellent instrument that feels great, sounds great, and is up to the usual a++ standards of MIK small batch instruments. My experience is only with the original single-pickup version, but I can't imagine this somehow became magically enshittified with the addition of another pickup. Reverend stuff is really nice, the bass is great, if you like the looks and like shortscale basses I wouldn't hesitate to grab one.

775I have four Les paul Shaped guitars if you count my Marauder, so I really don't need another one but I've always loved these Burnys and my friend selling it is deal, breaking, my resolve.
Not this one but exactly like it. 90s so it has the lightning bolt inlay instead of the direct copy. Talk me out of it

Re: Gear: TALK ME OUT OF IT or JUSTIFY MY PURCHASE?
776Sorry, can't talk you out of that in good conscience. I have a Burny RLC that's identical ('89, lightning bolt inlay) and it's my favorite guitar that I own. The only thing I did change was the bridge pickup, but the original was fine and that's just personal preference. Buy now and enjoy. If you like it more than the four you have, sell your least favorite of those.TylerDeadPine wrote: Tue Jan 07, 2025 2:33 pm I have four Les paul Shaped guitars if you count my Marauder, so I really don't need another one but I've always loved these Burnys and my friend selling it is deal, breaking, my resolve.

777Foiled again! It WOULD be nice to have something WiTh DimArZios or DunCans
Re: Gear: TALK ME OUT OF IT or JUSTIFY MY PURCHASE?
778That was exactly my rationale when I picked mine up, as I typically always used PAF-style pickups. Ended up putting one of these in the Burny and I'm still very happy with it a few years later:TylerDeadPine wrote: Tue Jan 07, 2025 6:38 pm Foiled again! Re: Gear: TALK ME OUT OF IT or JUSTIFY MY PURCHASE?
780You other nerds failed to talk me out of it. It needs some work which I'm going to detail in the projects thread because it might be of use, but otherwise I see why you love this guitar - it's on the level with any other good les paul I've played, and there's something spectacularly aggressive/raw about the pickups. They're high enough output already so I'm not swapping them.
