Going to Cancún next month as a +1 for a few days. Fancy resort on the beach, but im not a fan of fancy resorts. Any recommendations off of the beaten path? I’m bringing my fly rod.
…if you don't just HAVE to do something, there are worse ways to spend a day than just laying on a beautiful beach with a margarita.
Yeah, starting to think that laying around the beach with a pen and notebook might not be a bad way to go for a few days. Maybe get up and whip a clouser fly around, then go back to ruminating.
Owen, looking forward to your update!
Just got back from my 5 days of doing nothing in particular in Cancun.
If you are on the main hotel strip as we were, there is a little unassuming place called Fish Fritanga, which is a regular restaurant (you go down towards the lagoon) and taco stand (street level). Both are excellent, but I ate at that taco stand 3 times in 4 days for lunch. Fish, shrimp, and pastor tacos all excellent, and at a good price. $2 or 2.50 usd per taco.
I also think it is worth doing a trip over to Isla Mujeres. If you decide to do that and want to sea fish (or a boat tour/snorkling), check out Captain Pulpo, a local fisherman who is a great guy who will take you out to fish, serve you chips, salsa, beer while you fish. Cook your catch, stop off at little spots to swim if you want. Just a real good relaxing time with a dude who has good energy and loves what he does.

I did notice a few piers/bridges that locals were fishing at when you drive in, didnt partake myself, but depending where you are there should be a walkable option.
