It's definitely an unnerving experience, and the fact that there was no explanation offered to you by the pilot would NOT have helped at all. In both of my cases, after the plane had re-ascended and re-joined the pattern, the pilot went on the intercom and explained what happened.

Yes, I was going to post a screen shot here with a sacrastic comment like "so Trump now supports trans community" but erm, didn't. My first guess was it slipped through as it is a quick shot and I had to take a second look to be sure, but maybe it's some n-level trolling, I just can't tell anymore.
