This is all so true. Every fucking trade show/conference I attend (related to robots) is all about the fucking AI. Your presentation proposal won't get accepted unless it has something to do with AI. So stupid.

Obviously it's relevant. I'm not saying that it isn't.

But it's like they have forgotten about everything else that is relevant to robots.

And many of the people they have speaking about AI have NO FUCKING CLUE what they are talking about.

To be honest, many of these trade shows aren't really worth the time of a technical expert. It's mostly marketing/sales/management folks trying to make themselves feel relevant and important. Like LinkedIn.

I lean toward the “resistance is futile” stance. Neither crap nor n/c. Just asking pointed questions like fm andyman.
Because ignoring it won’t make it go away. Might as well harness it.

Was just speaking with a good friend who works in AI for an insurance company. Soon her team - which she leads - has to present a project they've all been working on to a buncha vice presidents and stuff. I was trying to get the gist of what their app does. They call it YODA (your own data analyst) and in my search online trying to suss exactly what it does I found another YODA (your own data analytics). She wasn't happy about there being another YODA. I'm imagining a West Side Story battle but with data analysts.

I just had to prove I'm not a robot selecting in a 3x3 grid all of the images containing taxis. One image was very clearly a yellow Audi roadster type car, with no indication it was a taxi for hire (lacked all symbols indicating such), so I did not select it. This was incorrect, as it told me to keep going. I selected that image and it let me through. I suppose I proved I'm not a robot, but I question whether this algorithm "knew" that car was not a taxi or was "tricking" me in some other way.

The next generation of students is going to be shockingly if not debilitatingly deskilled due to AI.

On the one hand I remember reading an old critical edition of Hamlet where the editor complained about teaching the worst students perhaps ever (i.e. millennials like me). But man, I've had a students come up to me in tears saying they don't know how to hold pens or haven't written a paragraph in years without using Siri. They're all fucked.

Remember in the early 2000s how everything was "HD", "High Definition", "Hi-Def" or whatever? Even if it wasn't related to video display or imaging systems.

Back in the 80s, everything was "Digital", no matter what it was related to. God help you if your appliance used an analog logic circuit instead of a nice high-tech 4 or 6-bit digital op amp.

In the 60s and 70s it was "Solid State". Every fucking thing with a plug on it had to say "Solid State". "Thank lord Jesus that there aren't any vacuum tubes in this toaster or daiquiri blender!". "There aren't any vacuum tubes in this RCA color TV, except for the giant fucking vacuum tube that produces the image, that is".

In the 20-30s it was all about "Radio" and "Magnetic". If you were going to brand a new fangled celluloid collar, horse liniment, or wagon, it better have the word 'radio' or 'magnetic' in its name. See also: Aero, Aeroplane, Airline, etc...
