Objectively, Sumner is a weak singer who sounds like he’s forever figuring out a melody as he’s singing. But New Order rules and the singing is, I’d say, strong in the band context, and maybe there’s a shakiness that compliments an otherwise really “produced” sound. Boy, it must have been painful to hear those vocals soloed when mixing, though.

I like a lot of other singers who aren’t very “good”, but in order for that to work, there has to be something special with a vocal character (Yow, Schneider) or be a particularly good storyteller or have a compellingly droll thing (Townes VZ, David Berman, whatshisname from Pavement etc).

Definitely let’s not shoot any of these folks, please.

I'd say any Nick Cave project, really.
A bold assertion, but y'know, you're not wrong. Especially with The Birthday Party.
That's them, officer; that's them right there ☝🏽

An observation: Bernard Sumner can sing OK he just can't write lyrics so good.
