Not the OP, but I developed a way of playing dynamically that included moves to a neck pickup with the volume rolled down into a saturated amp/overdrive pedal. Not unlike how Mr. Mackaye got so many tones on stage without pedals in Fugazi.

I had a guitar with an atypically placed pickup selector that I could flick in half a beat without looking down while singing. When the bastards stole that guitar I found some neat replacements, but was always very awkward performing the switch during busy parts so I put it at my feet in an EQ.

Anyhow, there's nothing quite like the sound of rolled off volume into something gained up. It has this semi dirty sound that you can't get by adding just a little gain to a clean signal- working the opposite direction. I saw a video of J Mascis explaining how what everyone notices about the limited volume of a Big Muff is solved for him by starting with an overdrive pedal turned really low so the signal audibly blooms when he engages the muff (double entendres abound). Since he plays into a dimed Marshall it makes sense that he found dynamics by being subtractive instead of additive with a boost.

If you're DIY-inclined, the barbershop schematic is out there, and there are pre-fab PCBs around as well. J201s can be a bit fussy but it's a really simple (great sounding!) circuit so would be a very straightforward home build.
Yep. I plan to try building one at some point. Actually rearranged my shed/home office today and dug out my old electronics equipment. I have a bunch of J201 and other j-fets. I've been tempted to wire up a little tester for them as I do find working with them a pain in the ass.

I used to do the volume roll down a lot many years ago. Not sure why I got out of it. On my old strat I even wired up a little switch that bypassed the volume knob so I could go between full on and the same rolled off spot with a flick.

I know the Mascis video you are talking about. Pretty cool strategy.

I meant to mention this is a brilliant idea. If I were fully committed I would do this. I'd probably spend weeks determining the proper placement, as my performance never fully recovered from the theft of my old guitar which had a selector switch in exactly the right spot. It turned out it had been an SG jr (or whatever the single pickup model was in the 80s) that someone had modified adding the second pickup and placing the switch in an unusual place.

I had a passive pedal that I built a standard guitar volume and tone pot into that were on their own foot switches. It was an easy way to do a thing.
Was Japmn.

Simple, elegant.

So, turns out that boosting the Barbershop overdrive with most any clean boost gets pretty awesome gnarly. However, this also adds to a huge volume boost like you'd get from boosting an amp instead of just more distortion like boosting most dirt pedals. Great sound, but not for my midnight riff fishing excursions. My luxury of options is a happy problem.
