Re: Gear: TALK ME OUT OF IT or JUSTIFY MY PURCHASE?
1072I forget if I've written about this here. I put a set of the Mr. Fabulous Old Black pickups in my Revstar with p90s. I really, really liked the Firebird PU, but I hated the un-potted build. Also, while the P90 neck sounded very good, I do 90% of my playing at my work/studio desk and I'm spoiled by hum cancelling pickups.VaticanShotglass wrote: Wed Sep 10, 2025 4:39 pm As for pickups, I've seriously been thinking of putting some alternative to standard humbuckers in my les paul, and I've specifically been eying full sized firebird pickups. I like humbuckers, but the more I play the more I want more of the definition, attack, and percussive qualities I associate with single coils. Yet I definitely want it to stay in the humbucker ballpark.
I've been considering the Mr. Fabulous Big Bird sets, but I'm a little worried they will be too bright and not thick enough. His stuff does seem well made and is attractively priced. I've been digging through alternatives, however, and keep coming back to either some sort of full sized Firebird design, some sort of scaled down Wide-Range design, or Fralin Big Singles.
Sooooooooooo.... I ordered a potted Firebird set from Mr. Fab. I should get it later this month when my friend brings it to me. I'm pretty excited.

1073Turns out the humbucker sized Firebird pickups I have are Magneto Design Labs unpotted “vintage smooth”. I think they are wound at around ~6 k or so.
Re: Gear: TALK ME OUT OF IT or JUSTIFY MY PURCHASE?
1074I’ve been on a big selling spree to trade “up” on my unused stuff and now I need to start inventorying and selling off amps and mics I don’t use. I am a serial pay-in-4 user and have accumulated a lot of stuff I want to exchange for something nicer. Plus, the value of a lot of the tube amps I bought before 2020 has shot up, but they’re still taking up the same amount of space.
One I’ve always kind of wanted but never tried was the Sennheiser 441 - the only issue I can find about them is that they’re expensive for a dynamic mic.
I could just as easily put the money into the Coles 4038 I’ve been wanting or even just getting another at4060 or C38B so that I can complete a stereo pair of my favs. Or keep selling amps until I can get a crazy Soyuz but I don’t know how much I’d have left to record at that point. (We are learning about opportunity cost in my macroeconomics class and I am supposed to be doing homework right now.)
Either way, I’ve got to sell stuff before I can make any more purchases, and the 441 looks cool and useful, thoughts? Has anyone gotten one and felt underwhelmed?
I am more in a hurry to make room and sell things than I am to buy them, but I do try to have a plan lined up so that I can come up with a sales target, decide whats going to go, etc.

1075441's are cool mics, used one on snare ages ago and got a great sound.
Lots of 441 action in this perfect song here:

1076I remember Steve noting that they had pretty good rejection, probably why they were used here (besides looking cool):

I remember using one on a floor tom ages ago and it was good, maybe not spectacular. There's probably less expensive stuff that do what these do but they do look neat so why not.

1077Guys, I know I was just asking about the mic but I’m starting to see… Yamaha CP-70s pop up semi-locally (central TX) for a fair enough price? How stupid would I be. They can sound cool, right? I actually do use the sound on the Yamaha reface, but its not as easy to love.
There are also Rhodes and Wurlitzers showing up around Houston for 1200-1500 (about the same as the yamaha) but I am less confident in their condition.
Work is getting bad enough that my only hope for using up my vacation before the end of the year might be to start taking some fridays off, even with the holidays, so I wouldn’t mind a little drive to get my mind off things. Plus stupid classes. I should just be hammering on one of these fuckers in a robe with a candelabra on top of the piano. Curtains drawn! One long midnight.

I have a Yamaha CP-35 and I gotta tell ya, that thing is super fun to play. Great key action, the 'piano synth' sounds are really nice, and it does this weird thing where once you've pushed the key all the way down, there's a second press that does a weird little vibrato? I vaguely remember reading that the 35 or the 25 was the supertramp stage piano, so that's kinda what it sounds like. Takes pedals really well!
Mine was maybe $200 back when I got it, but it is a goddamn boat anchor. It's big and takes up space. I believe the CP-70 is even more bulky because it has a baby grand body? I don't think I'd spend $1200+ on it, but I do love the 35. I lust for a wurlitzer, and I like Rhodeses enough, but not as much as a wurli. I think if you have tons of space it might be fun, but even moving the 35 is a pain in the ass.
Re: Gear: TALK ME OUT OF IT or JUSTIFY MY PURCHASE?
1079Has anybody ever played a Reverend Descent guitar? Been thinking about buying an RA Baritone.

Re: Gear: TALK ME OUT OF IT or JUSTIFY MY PURCHASE?
1080Yes. I've played and owned a bunch of their guitars. I haven't spent much time with the Decent, though. All the Reverends are really well made. I think they're even better quality than American Fender. They do a great job on their pickups and hardware, not to mention the wood work is also very good. They often do roasted maple necks, which I really like. I don't know if the prices have gone up since the stupid tariffs, but before then you could get a rev for under $900 new, which seemed like a steal.bassdriver wrote: Fri Sep 19, 2025 12:00 pm Has anybody ever played a Reverend Descent guitar?
