These guys are pushing 30+ years and have put out a lot of music and managed a career out of it.
When you’ve been around this long not everything is going to be a show stopper but Jupiter is a work of flawed genius IMO. Live they are always phenomenal.
There’s a lot of crossover with Hydrahead stable and bands like Converge.
It was great seeing them play with Torche last week. The juxtaposition of two ends of heavy music made for a great night out. Cave In played Jupiter all the way through with a Led Zeppelin cover to fill out the set. Proggy, indulgent and sprawling. Torche was just a singular wall of sludgy riffs that could have been one long song, which was glorious.
And unless someone here knows them and tells me they’re total jerks they seem like the kind of guys that would be FMs.
Edit: I was just reading the sleeve notes for the 25th anniversary reissue and the Dazed and Confused cover dates back to the first Jupiter tour…
Re: Cave In
2A band that has made admirable career moves but hasn't made much music I really like. Until Your Heart Stops was good (but not crucial) metalcore; Jupiter and Antenna were OK, if not massively in debt to bands like Failure and Hum. Haven't heard any recent stuff.
A lot of that generation of metalcore bands always seemed to struggle to "mature". Converge really were the exception to the rule. I don't mind the later Cave In or Dillinger or Poison the Well records, but they all lack the excitement that their early albums had.
I say NC, but I can think of other bands who make similar sounds that I'll reach for first.

Re: Cave In
3I'll throw on Beyond Hypothermia and the first few tracks of Heart Stops (which rock but the album loses momentum quickly) occasionally but didn't care for the Radiohead aspiring albums at all. When they did 'go heavy' again it was more in the form of boogie or stoner metal which was also kinda meh. Taken as a whole I'd probably have to go with Crap, as good of a guitarist as Brodsky is.
I agree it's hard for these bands to maintain the energy they had coming out the gate. Dillinger aged much worse (too many lineup changes, laughable attempts at 'branching out').

Re: Cave In
4Never cared for them much but gave them the benefit of doubt at Roadburn. I bounced after two songs to go see another band.
Re: Cave In
5They became more interesting to me when Brodsky took over on vocals. I remember seeing them on tour in early days after that shift and a bunch of hardcore kids were there ready to karate dance. Dudes were using toy ray guns to make noises through their pickups and the youth crew was BUMMED! Things were far more narrow and tribal in those days.
I've found Brodsky to be more of a skilled technician than a resonant songwriter for me. They make a sharp sounding record, dude can sing, he takes risks, and I dig most of it. None of it pulls on my heartstrings though.

Re: Cave In
6I first heard them and saw them when they and Isis came through Chicago on tour in 1999. They all stayed at my apartment in Wicker Park for two days and played at the Fireside. After the Isis set we were out back smoking a joint and I was telling them how much I enjoyed their set and Cliff said to me "if you thought we were good wait 'til you see Cave In." We went back in and I did and they completely melted my face. One of my most favorite musical experiences. I loved Until Your Heart Stops. I obsessed over it for months. Raved about it to anyone who would listen to me. Thought for sure they would become HUGE. Nothing before or after that record except Creative Eclipses moved me in any way. They became popular but not to the level I thought they might.
We all lived in LA around the same time about 15-17 years ago, me, all of Isis, Mark from Hydrahead who is a friend from college, and Caleb and Adam from Cave In. Cliff from Isis is one of my best friends from college so we all socialized a lot. Bowling in Eagle Rock. Metal Nights at Footsies. Zozobra playing at the Eagle Rock Center for the Arts. Metal festivals in Pomona. Isis at the Henry Fonda theater. Isis at Doug Weston's The Troubadour. Caleb became a friend of mine, and Adam as well. Steve and JR were nice guys too, I just never got to know them very much as they lived back east. Cliff was in a relationship with Emma Ruth Rundle at the time too so I got to know her as well and saw her perform solo in Santa Monica and with Red Sparowes with Cliff opening for Boris.
Anyway based on that one and only time I saw them and those records which I still enjoy immensely and Caleb's fantastic smile and good vibes, may he rest in peace, I will say

Re: Cave In
8Gotta be honest...
After Caleb passed?
It is about like Deftones after Chi's accident.
It's not really their fault, but I just cannot bring myself to feel the same way about it that I did. That's accounting for that Cave In had maybe the best person to step into a spot that any band has ever had.
It's just that even listening to it(in either instance...) will just put me in a spot where that someone is gone hits all over again.

Re: Cave In
9One little thing that I don't know comes up that much...
A band looping as a way to make that they were tuning less of a chore for the audience.
I don't know that any band will ever do it better than Cave In did on a couple of instances that I was there for.
That, and a Lakeview Links show where Brodsky's entire soundcheck was a quick "Fuuck.." really loud then even louder.
Priceless.

10While I'm at it, one little thing from out in the weeds...
(Get that this is probably not anyone's favorite era of this band....)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXV1PI0 ... rt_radio=1
While it went on to be a pretty clear line of demarcation between "This Is Stephen Singing..." and "This Is Caleb Singing..."?
Caleb singing a more sung part behind Stephen in that chorus?
It is a total gem. It's almost like the couple of times Mike Johnson would sing behind J. once joined Dinosaur Jr.
Not something I ever would have thought that I needed, but it's still completely priceless once it happened.
