Without room delay and reverb tricks I guess I can see how the drums could be acoustically underwhelming, but I personally don't mind dry drums. Maybe the better direction for the remix should have been to make it sound as good as it can and not like the practice tapes, but oh well.
My real issue with it is it sounds like it was recorded on a blown out micro cassette recorder. The guitars sound like driving a lawn mower across a pile of steel chains and the drums sound like one of those little kids kits... and the songs don't make up for the bad production, but thats my opinion. I've never found much to like about it.

I had completely forgotten about the Tweethan mix until last weekend. I walked into a record store in Normal, IL and saw it in their "previous RSD releases" bin (along with The Jesus Lizard's Flux and the vinyl reissue of Shudder to Think's Pony Express Record). Anyway, I purchased it and just finished listening to it for the first time now.

I think I like it better than the original mix? There are fewer things that make me cringe.

Spiderland still wins.

Didn’t know of this - gave it a spin today - gah - nothing to excite me here - it sounds so Big Black derived it’s painful in places. I have the original and I prefer it muchly.

I still reckon Spiderland just needs to be a 2 song 10 inch - washer on one side, good morning captain on the other… the rest - maybe apart from breadcrumb trail - I just don’t need

Interesting take. To me, the Tweethan mix makes it feel like more of an instrumental album than the original mix. I suppose more focus on the instruments could make it sound more like Big Black.

It's weird not hearing the "steve these headphones are fucked up..." studio dialogue at the beginning.

I mean, it’s Spiderland but after spending some time with Tweethan mix I think I prefer it. It sounds a lot more level and doesn’t have the weird whatever Steve did to it going on. The original sounds like an outlier in Steve’s career, it’s probably the only album he recorded that I never really enjoyed the sound of. It’s kind of fizzy sounding.

The Albini version of In On The Killtaker sounds like ass, and fortunately both he and the band knew it

It was a “refined demo”. I think the story is they came in for a demo session got overly excited and let the tape roll. Good Cop sounds okay but yeah… it’s not great.

"Returning the Screw" sounds like Ian singing for Shellac, which is worse than it sounds on paper
