I've got a P3-24 that came with the first version of the TT-PSU so you can select between 33/45 but can't finetune the speed. Lots of verbiage about how the newer PSU "sounds" better etc which seems a little NICE CABLES to me.
Yes. Recommended. I dunno if it sounds better but I was surprised that my table was running fast.

My main setup in my home office is very, very simple:

- U-Turn Orbit Basic turntable w/ Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge
- U-Turn Pluto pre-amp
- U-Turn Ethos powered speakers

I have a second setup in my basement that I use infrequently:

- Audio-Technica AT-LP120 turntable w/ Ortofon OM20 cartridge
- ART DJ PRE II pre-amp
- An old Sony integrated amplifier that I inherited from my Dad
- An old set of Bose speakers, also inherited

In other words, nothing really to see here.
More than decent options methinks. The second one might be the best of them, that OM20 is a winner. The only Sony amplifier I had was a cheap 80's model that did the job but I read the older ones were pretty good for the money. And a pair of old Bose's will always deliver.

Very basic equipment that sound great and will probably still be working after I'm long gone.

Folks. What wired over ears do you use for your hifi?

I’ve got an old pair of Sony MX that sound fine. My expensive Sennheiser Monitors sound so flat it’s horrible.

Can an audio nerd explain why my fancy monitors sound so bad?

I like sennheiser headphones. I have also been pleased with AKGs and some sonys. i have never heard Focals or Meze or Hifiman headphones. I have never listended to any headphones that cost more than $500 so i have no idea what the super fancy $7000 ones sound like. Except I did hear a set of Stax headphones and they were amazing but horribly uncomfortable to wear, and you needed the special Stax amp that was like $1200 all by itself.

As to why your monitors sound bad - there could be several reasons, here are the most likely:

1. some folks claim that speakers that are specifically sold as studio monitors, and designed for professional use, are not always voiced the same as a home hifi speaker. The voicing is the cabinet tuning, crossover tuning, subtle shaping of the freq. response of the speaker so it sounds like the designer wants. And most hifi designers are not looking for absolute revealing clarity and detail that the designers of professional studio gear would be shooting at. Or to put it simply, it supposed to be flat.
2. the room and the speakers' place in it have a ton of influence on low end and high end response, so if you can move the speakers closer to or farther from a wall it will influence their bass response. room treatments and non-reflective surfaces have a big impact on high end and upper mids. So try moving the speakers or adding some curtains or absorptive surfaces.
3. your speakers could just suck. or be broken. have they ever sounded good? even in other people's systems? do both tweeters work? does the woofer move smoothly or is the coil rubbing on the magnet? yamaha ns-10s suck, and will never sound good, but people love them.
4. hifi wise - many problems that are audible at the speakers are caused further up the chain. so the problem could be an amplifier that is hurting or having trouble driving your speakers for some reason.

hope this helps

Hi. Thanks! For clarification they are sennheiser monitor headphones. I suspect you flatness comment is the issue.

I have a Schitt headphone amp, which is great. I was considering an Schitt EQ for a little stack. Thoughts?

Yeah, I noticed mine was running slow (RPM app said 1.6% which was just discernible enough on a few records). Ordered a new belt, and found a place that'll take my older TT-PSU as a trade in so seems like an easy thing to just go ahead and do.

Someone recommended speaker stands for my JBL L100s. I’m sure they would help but kind of a boring purchase.

I use a Pro-ject Carbon w/ blue ortoron cartridge > Lounge phono preamp > Sherwood S-8000 IV tube receiver > vintage JBL L100s

I write all this because stands are expensive and I like the JBLs but wonder if I shouldn’t sink the money into something else? Some of the stands look stupid expensive and don’t want to be caught holding the bag if the JBLs get too expensive to keep up. I could move up to a bronze Ortofon for what some of those stands cost.

Not in a hurry to change anything as I notice that classic rock records and jazz with blazing horns sounds extra good through this setup… the sound stage is about a million times improved vs other options, like streaming stuff.

So… recommend JBL stands? Or something?
