It's not hard to see how he draws in idiots, the trickier thing is explaining all of the otherwise intelligent people who didn't just pragmatically select him for certain political goals, but also have a genuine devotion to him. Devotion lets them off the hook. I could forgive actual devotion. I don't think most people in elected office are actually devoted to Trump. Maybe MTG and a few others are/were. Most are simply using him to get what they want.
