Not blowing smoke, but you could seriously contemplate a career in comedy.
Re: Politics
7042I read on reddit that Trump probably just saw Greenland on a map and said "that should be ours" without even realizing that it's already a country and (of course) without thinking about the consequences for NATO , but he is unable to admit he's wrong so here we are. And this sounds plausible and definitely aligns with his general world view taken straight out of late XIX/early XX centaury, but it also aligns with Putin's policy so much I wonder if the entire thing can be inspired by Kremlin - they've planted the idea he needs Greenland in his head and now it's high fives all around there.
Re: Politics
7043it's because it's big. not more complicated than that. he's dumber than you could ever possibly imagine.

"From the start, the officials said, Trump appeared fixated on Greenland’s size — or at least how large in appears on maps using the Mercator projection, which makes the island’s 836,000 square miles appear roughly the same size as Africa. Even if the island is smaller than it appears, acquiring it would amount to the largest territorial acquisition by any American president — and would make the US the largest country in area on Earth."

Re: Politics
7044Trump has his own Russian Orthodox propaganda machine in America's evangelical dingleberries. It's only a matter of time before a unit of fat ICE recruits are on a commandeered Venezuelan oil tanker off its frigid coast.
I'd rather be throwing darts.

Re: Politics
7046Speculative and maybe I'm projecting, but I could see Greenland as part of some sort of demented pissing contest w/Putin—in a misguided attempt for Trump to have his own Ukraine (even though that's been a minor disaster for Russia) and to achieve huge bigness (to borrow an ironic phrase from Naked Raygun, which now sounds like an unironic Trumpism).
As I mentioned in the Trump C/NC, it's incredible to me how profoundly un-American Trump's America-first bullshit is making the USA. His foreign policy reminds me less of the Bushes' G-man hawkishness and more of a showier, yet more half-assed version of Russia's centuries-long attempts to bully and/or conquer its neighbors. B/c doing so feels "important" and there's a degree of cultural entitlement to it. His fondness for federal powers, weak social safety nets, and loose regulations also seem very much in line w/the governments of many of the countries from which he seeks to bar immigration. To be politically incorrect about it, dude wants to turn the US into a modern version of a banana republic in order to line his friends and family's pockets while stroking his own massive ego.

Re: Politics
7048I read somewhere that one of his donors has a thing about Greenland. It's probably everything we hear: some billionaire asshole wants it, Trump likes it because it's big and he wants to be remembered by doing big things, like making America bigger (because to him size matters, *cough* tiny hands *cough), and he's been playing nice with Russia, so it has the added benefit of doing whatever Russia wants, probably through a mole in his administration (which, let's be honest, is probably everyone or at least most people involved). It can't be more complicated than that, he's not a complicated person and the goals of his underlings aren't really that complicated either. These are people who want simple solutions to complex problems, just like your angry uncle.OrthodoxEaster wrote: Wed Jan 21, 2026 9:44 am Speculative and maybe I'm projecting, but I could see Greenland as part of some sort of demented pissing contest w/Putin—in a misguided attempt for Trump to have his own Ukraine (even though that's been a minor disaster for Russia) and to achieve huge bigness (to borrow an ironic phrase from Naked Raygun, which now sounds like an unironic Trumpism).

Re: Politics
7050You're always taking this back to Russia. No one in this part of the world has been scared of Russia or has felt any of the conquer shit in the last 40+ years. Yeah, we buy oil and gas from them, but no one is scared of Russia anymore. You HAVE TO move on from that.OrthodoxEaster wrote: Wed Jan 21, 2026 9:44 am Speculative and maybe I'm projecting, but I could see Greenland as part of some sort of demented pissing contest w/Putin—in a misguided attempt for Trump to have his own Ukraine (even though that's been a minor disaster for Russia) and to achieve huge bigness (to borrow an ironic phrase from Naked Raygun, which now sounds like an unironic Trumpism).

Putin is invading Ukraine from the position of weakness, not strength. If it was anything else, then he would take more than 2% since the war started.
