So yes, people fear the Russians, and no, it’s not all based on propaganda.
It's really interesting and puzzling to me that stating that Russia is very much a threat is being called a "anti Russian propaganda" even though Kremlin has ben openly hostile towards all the countries of the former soviet block rejecting their (and ours, as I'm Polish) independence and having the approach that the all the countries should accept the idea of mother Russia, are silly not to do so and can and should be penalized for that. That has been their message for decades now and look what they're doing to Ukraine. So how can stating what Russian propaganda says can be called an 'anti russian propangda? I can only guess, but I think it's partially because of lack of Russian speaking journalist and correspondents on the west, so Russian media can be at Stalin level of hostile propaganda internally but the focus will be at whatever Kremlin's spoke person will say it English.
And the level of perceived of threat is very real - my girlfriend said that yesterday all the employees in her company received a letter that Warsaw office will relocated to one of the cities further West in case of a war and at my work a general talk about role of AI in 5 years was summarized with a comment "let's keep in mind hiding from Russian drones could be our main concern then". The hybrid war has already started, out of the top of my head here are more or less recent events Russian intelligence/military was behind:
- having a group of people planning acts of sabotage related to railway
- exploding part of a train track on a popular line, thankfully the gap in the track was too small so derailment was avoided (November of 2025)
- allegedly as no one was caught: detaching a cargo cart at a very busy railway junction, it was the last cart in the train so it had a device transmitting 'hey I'm here' signal, it was professionally detached from it and attached to he second to last so obviously not an accident (October of 2025)
- about 20 Russian drones entering Polish airspace and crashing mostly in eastern Poland, simultaneous with a massive anti-Ukrainian online campaign on social media (september of 2025)
- very possibly: two Belarusian helicopters entering polish airspace, doing a circle around the town of Białowieża, and returning to Belarus (august 2025). I know this part of border very well, there is no chance it was done by mistake (august of 2023)
- jamming of GPS signal coming from
Kalingrad Oblast - numerous times over the last few years
