Re: Create a 12-Song Sampler for a Genre/Music Marketing Term Nobody Uses Anymore (Or, “Papa, What Was College Rock”?)

When I discovered WDRE (formerly WLIR) from Long Island circa 1990 it was all about:

XTC 'Mayor of Simpleton'
World Party 'Put The Message in the Box' & 'Way Down Now'

+ these were new to me at the time:
Smiths 'How Soon Is Now'
New Order 'Blue Monday'
The Cure 'Just Like Heaven'
Sinead O'Connor 'Mandinka'
Sugarcubes ' Birthday'

To this day I hear these songs and I feel like I'm putting on my underwear and rushing out the door to high school.

ps also gotta mention:

Throwing Muses 'Not Too Soon'

edit:
+
Jesus & Mary Chain 'Head On'
Happy Mondays 'Step On'

Here’s what I came up with. I used 1987 as an arbitrary cutoff, as someone mentioned 1987 earlier. Also tried to keep it from being too much of a sausage fest.

Side A
The Replacements “Left of the Dial”
Romeo Void “Never Say Never”
Wall of Voodoo “Mexican Radio”
Dinosaur Jr “In a Jar”
Mission of Burma “Academy Fight Song”
Camper van Beethoven “Take the Skinheads Bowling”

Side B
Violent Femmes “Blister in the Sun”
Sinead O’Connor “Mandika”
Husker Du “Makes No Sense at All”
10,000 Maniacs “My Mother the War”
X “The New World”
REM “Radio Free Europe”

While I, from time to time, still listen to and enjoy a bit of the ol' what-used-to-be-called-college-rock, I'd have a lot more nostalgic fun w/:
Create a 12-Song Sampler for a Genre/Music Marketing Term Nobody Uses Anymore (Or, “Papa, What Was Pigfuck”?)

Maybe that speaks to why MrsEaster and I don't have any children?

My cousin was a college rock DJ in the 80s and I ended up acquiring all of his records. Here are twelve songs by twelve different artists, based on those records, that I think represent the obsolete 'college rock' genre. In alphabetical order:

The Cure - "Boys Don't Cry"
Devo - "Freedom of Choice"
Echo and the Bunnymen - "The Cutter"
New Order - "Blue Monday"
The Pogues - "A Pair of Brown Eyes"
Psychedelic Furs - "Love My Way"

R.E.M. - "Cant Get There from Here"
The Replacements - "Color Me Impressed"
The Smiths - "Ask"
Talking Heads - "Stay Up Late"
Tears for Fears - "Shout"
U2 - "Stories for Boys"

EDIT: oof, almost all dudes

Thank you.

Qualifier: I'm using "pigfuck" per its original coinage, thanks (but really, no thanks) to Bob Christgau.

Second qualifier: Focusing mostly (but not exclusively) on first-generation bands, as opposed to all that AmRep stuff that comes later, blurs together, and holds far less of my interest (especially nowadays).

Disclaimer: Such a ridiculous term!

Here goes:

Pussy Galore: "Pig Sweat"
Sonic Youth with Lydia Lunch: "Death Valley '69"
Big Black: "Kerosene"
Black Snakes: "One Shot World"
Killdozer: "King of Sex"
White Zombie: "Shack of Hate"
Rat at Rat R: "The Plague"
Butthole Surfers: "Moving to Florida"
Scratch Acid: "Lay Screaming"
Unsane: "Urge to Kill"
Drunks with Guns: "Zombie"
Swans: "Cop"

Maybe too forgotten but something from Bastards "Monticello" album (which got a few weeks of Peel//NME/MM hype) like Hole, Razor, Neighbour (the Peel fave) or Drunk would fit as well. While I like that album, its music, vocals (total Killdozer style) *and* lyrics feels pigfuck to the point of self-parody though it might have arrived a bit too late and was instead marketed as "grunge". On that note, some of TADs more abrasive early stuff sounded pretty darn "pigfuck" too in spite of the "flannel flava". Cows "Bum in the alley" deserves a mention too, great list though!
