Not how I took it upon viewing it but I like this angle, yeah.
SPOILER ALERT

From the director's own words about never showing the daughter, when her face is finally shown on screen, it's the first time she saw her daughter as a human being. And the last words in the film spoken were her saying, "I'll try harder." The director also mentions that the ocean rejects her and forces her to face her trauma.

As far as an exorcism, I don't actually think she freed herself from her trauma. It's that she was finally read to face it, which is a huge milestone.

Peter Hujar’s Day - artsy independent film that is essentially a conversation between friends. There’s more to it than that but I was sick on the couch with strep watching this shaking with the chills. I liked the acting, the time capsule production… couldn’t take my eyes off the actress who had that presence that great actors have. Of course the actor was great.

Anyways fell asleep and woke up feeling worse. I will probably never watch it again but I like that it exists.

If you watch the trailer that was pretty much the whole movie right there. Which I appreciate, but I’ve always had a soft spot for Warholian bitchy beautiful people who wouldn’t bat an eye if I were hit by a bus or whatever. My one flaw

One Battle After Another. Leonardo Decaprio is an underrated comedy actor. This movie was great, in so many ways. Sean Penn is perfect for his role, such a despicable character. Even Benicio Del Toro was amazing in his role, as small as it was. Hate to state the obvious, but this could be mistaken for a Coen Bros movie. The Christmas Club really had a similar vibe to it as the FBI from Burn After Reading. Or the bloody ending, pick your favorite violent drama.

Did anyone by chance take notice of the robe trope? Washed out former ex-military/cop type character in a bathrobe. Just so excellent and subtle detail.

After watching this, I thought it was a really good companion piece to Eddington, and I wondered what movie could stack up against these two and make a good modern American trilogy? What's a dark comedy, commenting on the current American political climate? I can't think of one off the top of my head. I can think of other movies that come close, but are either too absurd (like Bagonia) or not a comedy at all.

Rewatched Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman - got sentimental during the Albertson sequences.

Capped Valentine's Day off with Melancholia.
Justice for Kyle Bassinga, Da'Quain Johnson, Logan Sharpe, Qaadir & Nazir Lewis, Emily Pike, Sam Nordquist, Randall Adjessom, Javion Magee, Destinii Hope, Kelaia Turner, Dexter Wade, Nakari Campbell, Sara Millerey González

It sucked, which bums me out a bit, because it had such a promising concept.
What made it suck for you?
Really didn’t like the third act. The more the situation was explained, the less interesting it became. But I also didn’t care for most of the performances outside of the kid and Josh Brolin. I felt like I was watching an actor play a junkie, and actor play a teacher, an actor play a school administrator, etc.

I just saw The Reflecting Skin and knew I was on board for it within the first five minutes. There are some rough edges to this film (most of all the lead kid's performance) which I think might explain why it isn't talked about more, but I liked it very much, very happy I finally saw it. Would make a nice double feature with Poison For the Fairies.

Also, finally saw Kinds of Kindness. I really like some of Lanthimos' films, not so much others, this is in the "not so much" camp. There's an aspect of his style which feels like bullshit, in a way, and when he indulges in it it becomes too transparently obvious that it all may be just a bunch of empty zany mannerisms, it helps when there is a more grounded story to be told (such as in The Favourite or Poor Things). I usually like when authors are let loose, but in his case I feel that he doesn't really seem to give a shit about what might otherwise be confused with themes in films like this one. At least Bugonia was closer to an actual comedy, so I enjoyed that more. I had a good time, sorta. But a voice inside my head was always going "eh, really???" for most of the run time. It had enough actual humour that it landed on the side of entertainment.

The Reflecting Skin is a great movie, damn, I forgot about that. I'd watch it again.

Poison For the Fairies sounds great, and like it would be a good double feature with The Reflecting Skin. Thanks for the rec.
