If you said Fugazi, I'd probably see your point, but SDRE didn't break til after Kurt off'd himself. They had the excellent singer, cute guy(s), twin guitar, moody/dynamic market cornered. Husker Du had been broken up for like a decade! I think SDRE's first two albums and the Frog Queen departure are all solid, but maybe mumble-shout isn't your thing.

Husker Du could just fucking cook. So much urgency. Even in the later poppier stuff.

SDRE was doing a lot of things that weren't the Huskers goal. Slower, heavier, more atmospheric. HD is at their heart a true punk band. SDRE not at all.

Oddly never listened even though I knew they were pre Fugazi.

Fine, but I’d imagine you’d need an emotional connection from that era to feel strongly about them.

love how this thread turned into SDRE conversation although I started it

the third album was the one that really knocked me over for sure. i think seeing them play the early songs live really changed my appreciation for them which is weird because it’s not like diary and LP2 have poor production. brad wood did both and they sound great.

anyways, i love SDRE and i love Rites of Spring, i also love embrace and i also love The Rite of Spring.
