My Global Entry and TSA precheck have expired, and I fly to Hawaii next Wednesday.
Is there a way to get either program without an in-person appointment?
Re: Catch-all travel thread
452Mine were renewed after I reapplied and they reviewed my application - without an interview - but it took much longer than a week to process. Considering the current situation with the gov't shutdown, I have doubts that the process will be expedient.bigc wrote: Thu Mar 26, 2026 10:13 am My Global Entry and TSA precheck have expired, and I fly to Hawaii next Wednesday.

453So glad the city treated you and your family well!Frankie99 wrote: Thu Mar 26, 2026 10:02 am I have nothing but excellent things to say about NYC. Love the transit, love the people, love the vibe....
Record shopping in Chicago and LA is better than NYC IMO, tho I did find some gems - The Dead C, a Cure boot from the BBC in 84, A weird Bauhaus thing that has most of the BBC stuff, Dopethrone, My Dad Is Dead reissue, Dead Child, Coltrane, Alice and John, unopened Drive Like Jehu first record.....the kids bought some pop and hip hop stuff in DUMBO.
Can't wait to be back in May.
And that's a pretty cool haul.
But yes, record prices have always been relatively high here and shops can be a little picked-over. The landscape is nothing like the golden days of the '80s and '90s, but it's also a whole lot livelier than the relative vinyl desert of the late '00s and '10s.
Re: Catch-all travel thread
454I shouldn't seem like I'm complaining lol - I mean, I dropped like $400 on just record shopping so I did pretty OK!
Really happy with dead child, and my dad is dead, and the dead c and wait there's a theme. Big boys Fun Fun Fun 12 inch also I forgot to mention. It's the reissue but I'll take it since I missed it the first go around. Archers of Loaf live 10 inch I didn't have....
My biggest thing is that the metal selections where I live and in what I saw last wee seems really tilted toward the Deftones and avenged sevenfold varieties. Only the bigger, 2 story joint with all the t-shirts in the basement had a wide selection. LA and Chicago seem to range further, but I'm an interloper and I didn't make it to all your suggestions, so the fuck do I know. I plan on hitting the rest when I'm back up in May.

455Yeah this was my reminder that I expire in July. I went ahead and applied for precheck and clear this time. Will report back on wait times if I remember!.jfv wrote: Thu Mar 26, 2026 10:23 amMine were renewed after I reapplied and they reviewed my application - without an interview - but it took much longer than a week to process. 456Nice! I can't remember the last time I spent $400 on vinyl all in one go. Supercool.Frankie99 wrote: I shouldn't seem like I'm complaining lol - I mean, I dropped like $400 on just record shopping so I did pretty OK!

And naw, you don't seem cranky about it in the least.
NYC isn't much of a metal town in terms of record stores, as far as I know. Even compared to say, Philly. The shop you mention, Generation (where I'll occasionally drool over the punk 7-inches on the wall; they had an original Mentally Ill "Gacy's Place" some years back), is the only game I know of for such things.
Funny you mention the Deftones; I had no idea they were still as popular as they are. I was drinking at the bar of a newish, somewhat fancy restaurant (w/a focus on natural wine and oddball cuts of steak), and some girl sitting across from me (attractive, w/a large, glittering engagement ring) struck up a conversation w/my old, married ass about the hat I was wearing. When the conversation turned to music, she mentioned her incredible fondness for the Deftones. Discussing this band just seemed so... incredibly out of time and place. My friend and I were sort of dumbfounded by it. My wife just shook her head and smiled when I told her this story later on. It's a wonderful town.

Re: Catch-all travel thread
458The fact that the subways work as well as they do, run mostly on time, are completely intertwined with google maps, is MAXED at 37/week, with the SI Ferry free is an achievement!
Like, shame on other cities and states. This is how you run shit. The fact that so many things can be so well linked together.....I wonder if NY peeps take it for granted and I wonder if people from outside marvel and envy it as much as I do.

459Below is the above mentioned simpsons themed new one. Adjacent you can also see my shin is a Dan Higgs druid that I got last summer in LA. I knew who Dan Higgs was as Lungfish, and he read on a lord high fixers record a long time ago. Had no idea he was also a revered tattoo artist until just a couple of years ago.
This is the leg where I've begun collecting random pieces as I go and find shops or artists I like. There's some abstract images and a really cool Boba Fett portrait on the back of my calf you can't see.
I recommend tattoos and piercings. Life's too short. Wear and look how the fuck you want.

460Glad you enjoyed NYC.
I'm traveling through the Midwest for work this week and am looking forward to being back in a community not designed around the automobile. (Thanks to the MTA, I have lived without owning one for the past decade and do not miss it.)Frankie99 wrote: Thu Mar 26, 2026 7:16 pm I wonder if NY peeps take it for granted and I wonder if people from outside marvel and envy it as much as I do.
