i learned to play guitar by listening to belle and sebastian records.
yes. belle. and. sebastian. fuck off.
open chords, lots of A, E, G, and D, and the occasional difficult C#m. i learned. now i remember probably about 15 or 20 songs from them.
i would like to learn how to play most smiths basslines, but that will take lot of free time..
so yeah, i'm a pussy.

It looks like we both had the same musical beginnings. This song

I play bass and more recently guitar.
I started playing bass to sound like David Sims in Scratch Acid but I wasn't good enough, so instead tackled the usual stuff like Nirvana at first before moving on to Killdozer, Shellac, Gang Of Four, stuff like that.
I know a lot of Minutemen and Shellac songs on guitar and bass. Also Wire, TJL, Big Black.
I've forgotten a lot of others. This thread has inspired me to learn some new songs this week as I haven't done it in a while. Think i'll re-start Goat on guitar.

You guys know fuckload of songs! I know some riffs by all the bands I like, but full songs? I used to know some full songs when I was starting to play guitar, but I don't think I could play them now without hearing the song. Some Nirvana stuff, some Pearl Jam songs (Rearviewmirror was fun to play for a beginner), some Fugazi.. (I still like to play Waiting Room)

I still like playing alone Sonic Youth, but do I only know how to play a few of them in full (on standard tuning). Brother James, Silver Rocket.. uh maybe Shizophrenia and White Kross and those two songs from Dirty, and Dirty Boots.. and Death Valley, and some others, too. Its all fun to play, and to figure it out in standard tuning.

I always was determine enough to figure out a part I really, really liked, but never really bother with figuring the whole songs or albums. I guess you guys have a much better musical ear than I do and are more patient. Salut!

Oh, I could probably play some Pixies songs. Every cunt knows how to play some Pixies song.

Cool bass line. He probably listened to chic, James Jamerson, Mcfadden and whiteheads "ain't no stopping us now", Brothers Johnson etc.

The original version of "Strawberry Letter 23" by Shuggie Otis, that the Brothers Johnson covered, sounds like Fripp and Eno stepped in at the 2:23 mark. Amazing.

Sometime in jr. high I learned a barre chord by looking at picture of Johnny Ramone. Then I discovered if you uncurled your fingers a bit and pressed down, you get the 4th. Barre chord, 4th, 4th two frets up (5th) - Blitzkrieg Bop. I would sit down with the 1st Ramones LP front to back.

Shortly after, VU live at Max's became a "play along with" fave.

Then, working my way backwards, I learned basic pop songwriting from the girl group Phil Spector/Brill Building (especially Goffin/King) catalog.

Whenever I hear a song I really like, as soon as I can, I grab my guitar or keyboard and learn it, sort of reverse engineering the happiness and euphoria a good song creates.
