what instrument do you play primarily?

do any of you here go about learning songs by other bands?

out of boredom or just a desire to know how to play it?

and if so, are there bands whose songs you know a lot of? even entire albums by?

and if yes to that which bands/albums?

i'll go first...

i play bass. i don't think i know entire albums by anyone, but bands whose songs i know a lot of:

band: approximate # of songs
1. the ramones: 40
2. the jesus lizard: 30
3. led zeppelin: 30
4. shellac: 15
5. big black: 10
6. scratch acid: 10
7. the birthday party: 20
8. fugazi: 15
9. wire: 15
10. the stooges: 20
11. new order/joy division: 25

I could play 'Warehouse Songs and Stories' note for note when I was around 16 or so. I reckon I can probably still remember around half of it.

Anybody want to play bass and drums in my 'Du covers band?

I also think I can remember how to play most of 'Goat'.

super geeky.... agreed. i am a super geek though, so to stay out of this thread would be to live in a state of repression...

over time, i've learned to play many pavement songs.... 90% of the songs from the first song on the first EP to the last song on the third LP. i do it because i like to hear new versions of songs, which is what i provide myself with when i play a song. plus, there's little learning to do, what with all the open tunings.

also, marquee moon. i read some pitchfork review one time that said something like "learning to play marquee moon is impossible, and anyway it would be pointless and stupid!" and i thought 'oh? fuck you,' so i learned to play marquee moon. i can play as either verlaine or lloyd. no shame at all.

also, lots of fall songs.... mostly from hex, grotesque, and savin' grace

lots of VU songs.

lots of replacements songs.
