Okay. So Lou Reed is crap, right? Yeah, Lou Reed is crap, but I really like this album. It is not nearly as unlistenable as many would have it. I actually think it sounds very pretty, like layers uopn layers of birds chirping. This was the soundtrack to a late-night 13 hour drive from Cedar Falls, IA to Denver, CO, and everybody in the van agreed that they liked it very much.
I do not smoke pot, but on the rare occasions where I have a friend who forces me to do so, I will partake, on the one condition that we listen to Metal Machine Music.
NOT CRAP!

2i don't think lou is crap, and i especially like metal machine music. so, NOT CRAP. the fact that lou says he doesn't think he ever sat through the whole record = CRAP.

3Lou Reed is crap. Definitely. But this record, it is good. I love the Reed/Bangs debate about his record. Also good. I like the different stories about whether it was a serious attempt at a different sound or just a contractual obligation. Entertaining.

4Not at all crap.
One of my all-time greatest vinyl finds was picking this up in good condition for ten bucks. I've seen it go for up to sixty, which made me think I would never be able to own it, so stumbling upon it for ten was great.
Screw the CD version. It's not the same without the locked-groove.

5I love this record, esp first thing in the morning or last thing at night. I agree there are some v. "pretty" moments. I think Lou actually doesn't get enough credit for this record, its so active/aggitated and dense in comparsion to other noise records (esp the ones that followed in its wake) the man knew what he was doing.
-I'm the Classical and I approved this message w/r/t MetaMachMus

6I always found the cover art for this record to be extremely funny. He makes it look like a big live double album that Bruce Springsteen would put out just for his fans.
It's not nearly as unmusical and unlistenable as legend has it.
I say NOT CRAP.

9One of the many rites of passage for most rock critics is to slam this record and take pride in the fact that they've actually never sat through it yet can somehow tell you without a doubt that it's terrible. This is ridiculous, as it's actually a great album and not the mundane, ugly monstrosity its made out to be.
NOT CRAP

i can't believe it came out on 8-track. can you see someone driving around listening to that shit in their puce Eldorado or whatever?
