Advantages include being able to use classical guitar technique on electric, like complex arpeggios and skipping strings, and you have more control on dynamics overall.
disadvantages, i imagine it´s damn painful. but i´m starting to play fingerstyle with my brand new nylon acoustic (that i love) and i just saw a video of the black keys. the dude plays fingerstyle.

I do it, I think it sounds really cool. Lots more bottom.

I play lots of electric fingerstyle. I have long fingernails. I also sometimes play with a purple 1.14 mm Dunlop Tortex pick.

I've always thought that if I draw blood I'm doing something right.

Fingerstyle and slide guitar are two techniques I'm going to teach myself at some point. Expanding your technique is definitely not crap.

I would sooner wear a fanny pack than use a pick. My Tele is currently covered in blood and I think this is fucking awesome.

Not Crap in the slightest. Albert Collins did it exclusively and he's awesome. I'm pretty sure D. Boon is doing it on "Do You Want New Wave Or Do You Want The Truth?" (it at least sounds like it on the studio recording.) And that's one of the best Minutemen songs ever.
