Re: Thing on stage: Music stand

There may be instances when a music stand is acceptable, but given your criteria of 'original rock 'n' roll band' I would say unequivocally, crap.

Rock 'n' Roll is supposed to be rebellious, about freedom of expression etc. Cluttering up the stage with accessories that could get in the way is anathema.

Rock n' roll is about what's doing right for you. Tattoos used to be a sign of rebellion but now you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn't have one. Despite what some commercial made by some asshole might say, you can't be a rebel by doing what everybody else is doing and what "rebellion" is depends entirely on the ever-changing whims of convention. It's a stupid concept that still ties people to the dominant culture by tying their sense expression to what the dominant culture isn't. So do what you want whether it happens to fall into the conventional or rebellious category or not. Binaries are stupid anyway (I knew a social work professor who specialized in gender and masculinity and her contention was that the root of patriarchy is really binaries and who falls on the "right" or "wrong" side of them). If the stand feels like it's in the way of the stage, then make it part of the stage in some way that makes sense for your purposes. Make it into a sign or a sculpture of a naked woman or an airplane or something. Fuck 'em.
