His record was the one I streamed the most last year, per Apple Music. That was a surprise because I found it to be a kind of a grower - outside of blasting “Neon Moon” enough to make my wife’s eyes roll (I am Texan), I’m not super into 80-90s country, which is what Ryan’s voice most reminds me of. Should be my bread and butter given I’m 40 and in the right place for it but I went on a different path. So I liked it enough to listen to it over and over, but I wasn’t onboard right away.
So if the music doesn’t immediately reward, or holds associations you find ideologically suspect, give it a few more listens. Sometimes I do get a very strong ‘lyrics came first’ sort of vibe from some of the songs that doesn’t always seem to work with a big band, but that’s my problem and not his. He’s a very good singer.
Should also mention that FM BER hosted him for a solo set that I caught online that really made his music click for me. I know Davis is a lifer and maybe he’s already done this - I haven’t dug super deep into his discography yet- but I’m hoping for a solo record some day. It hits much differently.
Anyways - kind of a 2020s Richard Buckner with a more technicolor sound? Is that fair to say? I still need to listen to the new one.

2I'm not seeing a poll, but yeah, I love that record. The newer one is good too, although it didn't click quite in the same way as "Dancing on the Edge"
If you haven't yet, check out the Grace Rogers record, "Mad Dogs", feels like they're on the same wavelength.
