For me, first thing I imagine when I hear "shirt" without further context is "t-shirt". If it's something else, I'd likely clarify with "dress shirt", "button down shirt", etc.
Thanks. I guess I'm the opposite: I think of a shirt with buttons unless someone specifically says "t-shirt", but you're not alone with your take.
