wanted: Gibson SG Classic

I have white sg custom from 75 that snapped at the headstock twice, once when i dropped in it its case, and the other time after a tour as the idiots im in the band with put it on the baggage carrousel for our flight home.

It has been expertly repaired both times and after the second time the dude who fixed it had a good look at the case and saw that it was not supporting the neck as it should have.

that is something i always check now, never even occurred to me before these accidents.

No, you lemon. I meant the volute made matters worse. Those volute guitars always crack either above or below the lump.

Where are they supposed to crack?

They supposedly added the volute to strengthen it and also because it was supposed to feel nice to the player. It seemed to add a weak spot either side of the 'lump' of the volute as most 70s Gibsons I've seen broken either break really nastilly at an angle behind the 1st fret, or right across the headstock.

Here's that Sonex again, before and after

that sonex break pic looks exactly like my sg.

i have actually heard people say that it is stronger after it has snapped and been repaired... i don't really know if believe that... BUT... i do want to.

i do know that after the repair it didn't really have any noticable effect on playability or the tone of the instrument.
still sounds better than the other sg's we have.

i would buy one with a neck break if i was buying another just for the fact that it is a lot cheaper, provided i check the repair and could play it before hand.

Wood glues set harder than the original wood, so technically it is true (assuming it has made a proper bond on both sides). Doesn't stop the wood around the joint breaking again unfortunately.

Another problem with them volutey Gibsons is - because of the two weak points above and below the volute - when you have them repaired the original crack IS stronger but they just break again somewhere else. That Sonex has been snapped 3 times. ouch.
