So ok, there are things I am allowed to form opinions on in this world and things I am not allowed to form opinions on.
Muslims are not up for discussion for some reason.
Ok.
Maybe you should make me up a list.

Of course you are allowed as many opinions as you like...though i would think that having a more thoroughly informed opinion would be preferable, considering we are talking about more than 1 billion people.

And 60 thousand people go see garth brooks play.....just because a shit ton of people are into something does not mean it demands my respect

I don't respect Garth Brooks and I don;t respect any religion that demads women be treated like garbage.

I don't respect any religion, period. Why should I?

Why does it have to be violent?

I'm more regularly annoyed by the fact that such religions are by and large responsible (though by no means solely responsible) for women being kept as second class citizens, not to mention the oppression of homosexuals and the like. Violent acts are the tip of the iceberg.

It doesn't. I'm not condoning the way Islam is practiced in the majority of the world at all. I think we were trying to isolate what constitues the 'radical' wing of Islam vs. a non-radical one (at least i was).

Jesus Fucking Christ.

I don't even know where to begin. People, the media, even on this forum, bring up the damage Christianity has caused humanity and they completely skirt the topic at hand and effectively defend the actions by the psychotic muslims and the psychotic Sudan government. This is typical multiculturalism/moral relativism.

This fiasco is a small example of what religion brings to humanity. Those 'fanatics' calling for her death are those who are most consistent and in touch with the nihilist teachings of the quran.

Anybody who says the muslims are entitled to 'their way of life' or 'their way of thinking' consequently defends the execution of this teacher for committing blasphemy against an imaginary being. This is what you want, this is what you get.

BTW, Sudan has yet to outlaw slavery and they are on the United Nations Human Rights Committee.

That's a dealbreaker for me, sorry.
Gays getting executed, everyone being FORCED into the religion.

The things that you describe are terrible things, that are happening in certain Muslim countries. I think the disagreement is about whether these behaviours/actions are justified by or in accordance with the core beliefs of Islam. There's many a Muslim scholar/cleric who'll tell you they are, and many who won't. The problem is that the notion of what Islam is is surprisingly blurry for something that's supposed to be dealing with absolute truths. Same can be said for Christianity.

I don't think anyone's denying that there are some horrendous things happening in the name of Islam. I think they're arguing for the idea that this vicious and frankly evil version of the religion is a perversion of its true intentions.

It's easy to see how the writings of Islam, Judaism and Christianity could be perceived to advocate violence and oppression. For me, it's harder to see how they don't. But thankfully, a lot of people can find more tolerant and liberal ideas amongst them. It would be nice of religion could develop in that direction...

He went to bed about a decade ago, or whenever he sold his soul to the bankers and the elites.

At what point does everyone agree that something's seriously fucked with this religion?
Even the most hardcore fundamentalist member of pretty much any other religion would see that as being insane.

kerble wrote:okay, cool. so you don't know what you're talking about.

never mind then.

Women are allowed to wear what they want, do what they want with whoever they want in most muslim countries?
Wow, since when?

e.g. Muslim woman becomes imam (that's like female priests).

sure it's taking a while, but considering that Islam is almost 600 years younger than the next largest religion. it'll take time.

Gays are tollerated?

considering that there are 35 muslim run countries and only 6 have the bullshit death penalty, I'd say it was less than the majority. much less.

They DON'T blast prayers on loudspeakers throughout the city?

they don't. it's the call to prayer that's played aloud. the prayer is done in the privacy of the mosque or home. not on a loudspeaker.

keep trying, though!
kerble is right.

You are right. Quantity should not justify respect. But you have heard Garth Brook's music, right? You know what it sounds like right? Therein lies the difference between your take on Garth on your take on Muslims.

The argument is not if you should respect Islam or Christianity. I'm certainly not trying to convert you. Just recognize that the followers of both are not all so one-dimensional in their thinking or method of practicing their faith that they can be generalized as 'insane'.

You are right Kerble, Islam is a shining beacon of tolerance, acceptance and peace the whole civilized world should use as a guide.
