The Skoda Octavia is a great car.

Yeah, Skodas are great.

I don't know what US Fords are like, but European Fords seem like the most sensible thing to buy; brilliantly designed and extremely cheap to repair. Good value second hand too.

I have a Renault Laguna which I love, but it's not cheap to service.

It really depends on where you live.
In France, Fords are pretty expensive to repair, so are Volkswagens whereas Renault is cheap to service.

Renault Laguna is a great cat (far below Peugeot 407 though :P ) but its value on the second hand market in France is very low.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I bought it (used). Paid £7000 for it when it was a year old. Probably far, far more than I'd have paid in France though!

You Europeans got the cool Civic.

Americans apparently hate hatchbacks, and so we do not get this awesome Civic. We get a comparatively lame Civic.

Nico, do you know any Scots who would like to trade their kickass Honda Civic for a 1994 Ford Ranger XLT with only 56000 miles? Let me know how they want to work shipping.

Seconded-we have the same car now with 70K. Sort of reliable but all repairs were covered by the 100K mile warranty (used certified). Love the hatchback space and it can be a near-luxury vehicle if you want it to be. And they're cheap because they're less popular and desirable.

City mileage sort of sucks, but anything sucks when you're averaging 8 miles an hour.

Thanks, Chris.

FYI, for anyone else in this boat, here is what Consumer Reports (Thanks, Mr. Chimp) has for the most fuel-efficient cars. Sorry about the formatting.

The most fuel-efficient cars that CR has tested

Among Consumer Reports' vehicle test criteria are measurements of fuel economy. Our fuel economy numbers come from our measurements using a precision flow meter and are rounded to the nearest mile per gallon (mpg).

CR's overall mileage is calculated from equal portions of city and expressway driving and on a 150-mile trip.

The chart that follows features the 15 most fuel-efficient cars currently sold that Consumer Reports has tested (see our list of the most fuel-efficient SUVs). <snip>

I just got a New Mazda 3 hatchback a week ago. I absolutely love it. I had a 01 Volkswagen Golf before that would break every 6 months to the tune of $500-$2000. The Mazda gets pretty good gas mileage, mine has leather and feels like Luxury car and has enough room to haul a Rhodes suitcase in the back plus a 2x12, head, and 2 guitars.

A++++++++++, highly recommended, would buy again.

Being made in Mexico will do that to a car...

It was pre-owned Certified when I bought it too, so luckily it was under warranty. I loved the 1.8t but damn if that car wasn't a lemon.

Mazda's are supposed to never break, that was what most affected my decision to get it.
