Yeah man, going into a computer has spoiled me on trying to get some harmonic distortion type shit because so many of the new saturation/Transistor/transformer plugins are so good now that as long as I get nice clean input, I can do what ever with a click or two later. Even on the pres I have that can distort in a nice way, I usually don't do it anymore... just get it in clean and use Kazrog True Iron or stupid Sound Toys or something. Its fine.twelvepoint wrote: Tue Dec 06, 2022 11:51 am I think we discussed this a bit earlier in this thread (or was it another preamp thread?), but for me, I'm recording myself at home with no control room and getting a good take is 99% of my concern. Have a good performance and don't blow out the levels in a bad way. Tracking is the worst part in the recording workflow for me to be like "hmm, kick is sounding good, but maybe we can give this stepped attenuator a few clicks for some harmonic distortion bla bla bla"
Re: Preamps
52Man, some young rascal started a thread over on Gearspace (formerly Gearsluts just to be clear of who we're dealing with) about preamps being very overrated. There are some very angry boomers over there who are demanding tone lawyer badges are turned in for dishonorable discharge.
Re: Preamps
53Sure, but that's a bit orthogonal the point that was being made previously—the question was why someone would use "nice" preamps for particular close mic'd drum kit applications rather than using them on OHs or rooms. Not that you in any way need them, just that if you already have a quad of APIs or whatever in your rack, and you're either going to use them or sell them... why not take advantage of the thing that they do better than whatever THAT IC pre is in your interface?Kniferide wrote: Tue Dec 06, 2022 2:28 pmYeah man, going into a computer has spoiled me on trying to get some harmonic distortion type shit because so many of the new saturation/Transistor/transformer plugins are so good now that as long as I get nice clean input, I can do what ever with a click or two later. "Nice" pres tend to distort or saturate more pleasantly than utility pres, so if you have 'em, why not do the click or two beforehand and save yourself a VST instance?

I’d rather go deaf then hear another api pre amp. Those things have way to much midrange and no bass
Re: Preamps
55For me, I record myself at home with no control room and I just can't listen well enough to track using preamp saturation as an aesthetic choice. I do get that other folks have different working contexts, and probably better ears, but it's better for me to track conservatively and fix it in the mix.mdc wrote: Wed Dec 07, 2022 7:16 am

Re: Preamps
56That place is the worst. I remember some posts along the lines of "$15,000 to make a record? Back in my day we used to call those demos lol.."
Not even fixing really as all these 'coloring' decisions are completely optional. Now having to replace an unusably blown out kick sound, that's fixing..twelvepoint wrote: but it's better for me to track conservatively and fix it in the mix.

57Heh, Gearspace has some...strong...personalities, to the point where it can become a total freakshow at times, but there is a tonne of great info in there, and lots of very helpful peeps in between the mayhem. I am enjoying the preamps thread there : )

58The only good thing Gearspace/Sluts ever did for me was introduce me Ethan Winer's work.

59Agreed on all points. I liked the part where the blowhard told the skeptic, people like him were the problem with music.seby wrote: Wed Dec 07, 2022 8:23 pm Heh, Gearspace has some...strong...personalities, to the point where it can become a total freakshow at times, but there is a tonne of great info in there, and lots of very helpful peeps in between the mayhem. 60Hey I found out about Airwindows on gearspace, and learned a lot about dithering and src. Also a tonne of great small scale builders of great gear, both hardware and itb. I really do like the place!
