Yeah man, going into a computer has spoiled me on trying to get some harmonic distortion type shit because so many of the new saturation/Transistor/transformer plugins are so good now that as long as I get nice clean input, I can do what ever with a click or two later. Even on the pres I have that can distort in a nice way, I usually don't do it anymore... just get it in clean and use Kazrog True Iron or stupid Sound Toys or something. Its fine.

Sure, but that's a bit orthogonal the point that was being made previously—the question was why someone would use "nice" preamps for particular close mic'd drum kit applications rather than using them on OHs or rooms. Not that you in any way need them, just that if you already have a quad of APIs or whatever in your rack, and you're either going to use them or sell them... why not take advantage of the thing that they do better than whatever THAT IC pre is in your interface?

"Nice" pres tend to distort or saturate more pleasantly than utility pres, so if you have 'em, why not do the click or two beforehand and save yourself a VST instance?
