100% Not Crap.

I discovered them through both On Top and Jersey Girls, and checked out The Lipstick Game and Hee Saw Dhuh Kaet shortly after. All great records. I've said it many times before, but I literally learned how to play bass (and figured out how I thought a bass should sound in a rock band context) by listening intently and playing along to the songs on those two Steve-engineered records. I also saw them live twice around that era, one of which was at the Empty Bottle with Dead Meadow and that was a pretty fantastic show. I don't know...I obviously love their music, but I also feel like that band in particular was kind of my gateway to a ton of other bands and people who I love, and it was certainly the initial reason I came to the EA forums in the first place. So, while I don't obsessively listen to them as often today, they still hold a very dear spot in my heart.

I even like Curses. It's fun. Though I wish Steve had recorded it.

That band was SCORCHIN'. Of that throwback meathead rock of that era (say 1998-2004 or so), they were absolutely the best.

For a band that would scan as being red-lining in irony, it didn't feel that way watching them. Our first show in Seattle a million years ago was with them and the Thermals, and my lord, the Tight Bros just scorched everyones' faces off.

Rye Coalition is a band I wish I saw live back then. Maybe would hit me differently.
In 2000(?) when I was living in San Diego, my buddy and I decided we would see them as many times as we could. So SD, somewhere in Orange County, then some small town south of LA, and the last show was in LA proper. SD show ruled, the OC show ruled, then we show up at the small town show and it was cancelled last minute. Bummer, but we got word that the LA show was still on.

Show up at the venue that night and while they were setting up we realized it wasn't the same drummer. Before they started, Jared said, "Sorry, but tonight's show might be shorter than usual. We fired our drummer yesterday and our good friend is going to fill in tonight but only knows so many songs. Give it up for Dale!" That's when I realized it was Dale Fuckin' Crover. They RIPPED through about 6-7 of their originals and closed out the set with a 15-20 minute cover of "Shakin' All Over". It was amazing.

Rye Coalition are fine.
