Yeah Ian was one of one. I love New Order (y'all, the fancy dan box sets with all the extra DVD's and shit are great) but few bands have persisted through every phase of my life and tastes like Joy Division. I'd choose to keep JD over NO in a thunderdome, and I wouldn't think about it for more than 5 seconds.

Sumner - QUITE LOW on the list of potentially rankling singers.

Anyway, I got this CD earlier this week compiling the work of the Milwaukee power-pop band The Shivvers. Had heard them a while back but wanted more where that came from. The music is swell as you can hear here:

It then occurred to me that one way of describing the band is they sound how I imagine a female-fronted Elvis Costello & The Attractions would sound if I was more into Elvis Costello & The Attractions.

Now, I don't have contempt for Elvis; he's never struck me as a bad guy; he's hard-working, talented, etc. But weirdly, the vocals of his work have often struck me as the weakest link if not kind of a dealbreaker. And I've never gotten lost in any of it.

Edit for spelling.

I like GVSB. I saw Soulside last year and was outside smoking when I overheard Scott McCloud taking to some other dudes. His speaking voice is nothing remotely close to his vocals. It was off-putting.

Think he means . . . don't shoot Mick Jagger and make the song an instrumental. Instead swap him out for Otis Redding (also a better dancer). And add horns!
Yes!
This also works with the Beatles:
