The closest thing is the annual Balconing score.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/artic ... ng-website

Less about social media clout and more youthful stupidity.

There are a few deaths per year in the UK news of someone falling off something etc. while filming. So it’s not just an American phenomenon.
"The drive for clicks is strong with this one" ought to be a meme. Maybe baby Yoda?

It's not surprising to hear that this "balconing" became a "thing" on Ibiza. Makes perfect sense. Apparently the Brits rank number one. Congratulations!

Oh shit it happened a couple months ago, this guy was 26.

“Fell to their deaths” obviously sounds better than “jumped to their deaths”
precisely. that's one of those articles where the news is what they are NOT saying.

what a twisted mix combination of darwinism, xenophobia, and exploitation! need to watch a cute pixar short now.

That's terrible. But we also hear stories about women (especially of color, in the US anyway) having such horrible experiences with hospitals that I can see why they end straying from that. What I don't understand is why they choose this over a having a doula or mid-wife at the bare minimum. I guess those who choose this are susceptible to brainwashing.

The article addresses that point and steers clear of any victim blaming. This is about stupid hippies preying on the vulnerable, the same morons that are anti-vaxers. My first child had her cord around her neck. She would have died, even if we'd done a home birth with a mid-wife. Child birth pre-modern medicine was the number one killer of women. Even home birthing is deeply irresponsible. If you need an emergency c-section you have the real possibility of a dead child or mother.

Fuck hippies.

It's about both, yeah. I don't think I blamed any victims. I don't agree that home-birthing with doula or midwife is "deeply irresponsible" though.

This isn't new, of course, except maybe the influencer aspect.

Oh, no, I wasn’t meaning to imply you were victim blaming. I thought you might have skimmed the article and thought the authors were.

Honestly, kids doing dumb shit is as old as kids and will never change. But social media influencers are weaponizing it for some easily led kids. I genuinely think social media needs massive regulation. I just can’t see the benefits. They keep telling us is about freedom of expression and that it helps individuals fight against government oppression etc. Total bullshit. Even if it did the negatives in total really outweigh the good.

There is an element of personal responsibility when adults are concerned but as the article shows, vulnerable people are always at risk. As most of you know I live with a form of blood cancer. I’ve been successfully treated but I have never gone into even the shallow waters of the internet. I listen to my clinician, ask for second opinions from their colleagues occasionally but there is zero chance some asshole with a ponytail and a certificate in nutrition can tell me a trained doctor can’t.

The real world might be not as exciting but I’m happy to live here.
