Posting on a messageboard of a fairly obscure studio, admitting how many hours you've spent learning other people's songs... can it GET much more geeky?
That being said, I'm a drummer, but over the past few years I've pretty much taught myself guitar by learning Guided By Voices songs. I know 10-20 songs maybe, I've never counted. It's fun to play "Keep Up With GBV" by getting hammered and trying to play along to their records, but I drink like a human, not a professional, so I have to do it for the spirit of the thing and accept that I'll sound lousy.
What else? Of course there's the mandatory Shellac riffs, but they just don't sound right on a typical guitar rig. I can butcher Jay Ryan's main melody part to "what is your landmass?" on bass. Um, yeah. Go nerds.
